Nepal’s tourism, natural beauty and cultural heritage were showcased in Athens through a bicycle rally organized with the aim of promoting Nepal in the Greek and wider European market. The Nepali delegation, led by Manoj Newa Khadgi, President of the Nepal-Greece Friendship and Cultural Association, organized the rally carrying banners and promotional materials highlighting Nepal’s mountains, hills, natural landscapes, historical and archaeological sites, religious destinations, traditional arts and cultural heritage.
The rally began from Koukaki in Athens and passed through several prominent landmarks, including the Acropolis, Thissio, Plaka and Zappeion, before reaching the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) and the Temple of Olympian Zeus area. The rally later returned to Koukaki, where it concluded.

Nepal’s Tourism Diversity Showcased in Athens
Participants used the rally to convey messages about Nepal’s diverse tourism attractions to local residents as well as the international community in Athens. Through banners and promotional materials, the organizers highlighted Nepal as a destination combining Himalayan landscapes, natural beauty, cultural heritage, religious sites and adventure tourism. The initiative sought to create greater awareness of Nepal’s tourism offerings among potential visitors and tourism stakeholders in Greece. The organizers said the bicycle rally provided a distinctive way to take Nepal’s tourism message directly into the streets of Athens while also creating an opportunity to promote the country’s cultural identity.

Representatives From Tourism, Government and Nepali Community Join
Representatives from different sectors who had travelled from Nepal to Greece, along with leaders of the Nepali community in Greece, participated in the rally. Among those taking part were Dr. Shivaraj Adhikari, Dean of Bagmati University; Nabin Manandhar, spokesperson for Kathmandu Metropolitan City; Rajesh Kumar Shrestha, Ward Chairperson of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-18 and Infrastructure Development Coordinator; Ujjwal Kumar Ghising, founding president of NRNA Turkey and central member; Suresh Baral, President of the District Hotel Business Association Kathmandu (DHBA); and Kabi Kumar Maharjan, President of World Cycle Tour Champion Nepal. Krishna Pokharel, founding president of the Greece-Nepal Friendship and Culture Association and representative of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce in Greece, also participated in the programme.

Focus on Cultural and Educational Cooperation
Beyond tourism promotion, the programme also highlighted the potential for stronger cooperation between Nepal and Greece in culture, education, arts, heritage and community engagement. Discussions focused on expanding cultural exchanges and educational cooperation between the two countries, while also exploring ways to connect the skills, knowledge, and experience of Nepali communities living in Greece with Nepal’s development efforts. The initiative was also presented as an opportunity to strengthen people-to-people relations and create wider avenues for cooperation between Nepali and Greek communities.

Learning From Greece’s Urban Management Practices
The delegation also placed emphasis on studying Greece’s waste management and urban management systems and identifying practices that could potentially be adapted in Nepal. DHBA President Suresh Baral said the delegation was interested in learning from Greece’s experience in tourism management, cleanliness, waste management, and the protection of public spaces. Such exchanges, he said, could help identify practical lessons for improving tourism destinations and urban areas in Nepal.

Strengthening Nepal-Greece Relations
Nepal and Greece established diplomatic relations in 1962, and various initiatives have since been undertaken to strengthen ties between the two countries. The organizers said programmes such as the bicycle rally could contribute to expanding cooperation not only in tourism and culture but also in trade, education and investment. The rally also sought to use Nepal’s growing international tourism profile to create greater visibility for its natural and cultural attractions in Greece and other European markets.
Tourism Promotion Through an Unconventional Platform
The organizers believe that a bicycle rally through the streets of Athens can serve as an effective platform for promoting Nepal’s natural diversity, adventure tourism and historical heritage. By taking Nepal’s tourism message to a prominent European city, the initiative aims to encourage greater awareness of Nepal among Greek and European travellers and contribute to stronger tourism links between Nepal and Greece.
