Biratnagar Airport New Terminal Construction Progresses Rapidly

Construction of the new terminal building at Biratnagar Airport is progressing rapidly to enhance its facilities. Engineer Sanjeev Khadka of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal reported 47% physical progress and 37% financial progress in the construction. The foundation stone was laid on 1st Falgun 2079 by the then Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Sudhan Kirati. The building is expected to be completed by Mangsir in 2082.

The new terminal, under the contract of Koshi/Danphe JV Construction Company, will have a capacity to accommodate 550 passengers per hour. It will include 17 check-in counters, VIP lounges, play areas for children, conference rooms, customs, immigration, quarantine, and commercial shops. The project is designed to meet the growing demand for air travel in the region.

Currently, the airport serves around 2,000 passengers daily with flights operated by Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Shree Airlines. The terminal is being constructed with modern technology, and the company is committed to completing it on time. The airport, initially built with Indian assistance in 2025, spans 122 bighas of land.

Businessman Arjun Subedi from Biratnagar-11 expressed hope that flights to destinations like New Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Bangladesh will boost tourism in the region. The airport also had previous domestic flights to Pokhara, Bhairahawa, and the Himalayas. In the last fiscal year, the airport generated a revenue of NPR 17.56 crore, with over 329,000 passengers departing and arriving through the airport.
