The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) office of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has warned the public against flying kites, drones and balloons around the airport, citing serious risks to flight safety. The airport office said such activities, which are restricted under existing aviation regulations, can create significant safety challenges during aircraft takeoff and landing. In a statement issued on Sunday, the office said kite-flying activities have increased with the beginning of the Dashain festival and urged the public to refrain from activities that could endanger aircraft operations.

Kites, Strings and Drones Pose Flight Risks
According to the airport office, kites, kite strings, balloons and drones entering aircraft takeoff and landing areas can obstruct the safe operation of aircraft. Such objects can pose risks to aircraft during critical phases of flight, particularly during takeoff and landing, when pilots have limited time to respond to unexpected obstacles. The office also pointed out that existing legal provisions prohibit activities that could interfere with aviation operations around the airport.

Public Urged to Follow Aviation Safety Rules
The airport authorities said the public has repeatedly been informed about the risks associated with flying kites, drones and balloons near the airport. However, such activities have continued despite repeated warnings. The office has expressed concern over the continuation of these activities, particularly during the festival season when kite flying becomes more common. Authorities have urged individuals, families and communities in areas surrounding the airport to exercise caution and comply with aviation safety regulations.

Flight Safety Is a Shared Responsibility
The airport office emphasized that maintaining flight safety is not solely the responsibility of the airport and aviation authorities but also a shared responsibility of the general public. “Flight safety is not only the responsibility of the airport and concerned agencies but the shared responsibility of all citizens,” the office said, calling for public cooperation, coordination and responsible behaviour to ensure safe air operations and passenger safety. The warning comes as Nepal enters the Dashain festival season, when kite flying traditionally increases across Kathmandu Valley and other parts of the country. Authorities have therefore urged the public to celebrate responsibly while keeping aviation safety in mind.
