Bagmati Province Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya has described Chagunarayan Municipality as a unique and enchanting religious tourism destination of Nepal, stressing the need for greater promotion of its rich cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage. Speaking at the Aarati Pooja held on Sunday evening at the Pancha Mahalaxmi Mandir in Telkot, a revered temple within the municipality, Chief Minister Baniya emphasized that the area holds immense potential to attract both domestic and international visitors if marketed effectively.
The event was graced by the presence of Bagmati Province Minister for Culture and Tourism, Suresh Shrestha, along with local representatives, devotees, and stakeholders of the tourism sector. Their participation underscored the government’s growing attention towards uplifting local heritage sites as a means to strengthen the provincial tourism economy.
Religious and cultural significance of Chagunarayan
Chief Minister Baniya highlighted that Chagunarayan itself is globally recognized for its cultural and religious importance, being home to the famous Chagunarayan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The municipality, according to him, is not just a spiritual destination but also a treasure trove of archaeological monuments, ancient shrines, and traditional Newar settlements that represent Nepal’s living history.
He stressed that Chagunarayan is one of the rare municipalities where heritage, spirituality, and natural beauty coexist, making it an all-encompassing tourist attraction. The Chief Minister further explained that temples like Pancha Mahalaxmi Mandir add more depth to the religious value of the area, strengthening the spiritual fabric of the community and giving devotees multiple reasons to visit.
Call for greater promotion of heritage sites
Addressing the devotees and the media during the Aarati ceremony, Chief Minister Baniya urged all stakeholders to work collectively in promoting Chagunarayan as a hub for religious tourism. He stated that Nepal’s tourism economy could benefit significantly if such lesser-highlighted yet highly significant destinations are showcased to the world.
“Chagunarayan is an enchanting tourist site in itself. By promoting its religious, historical, and archaeological heritage, we can draw more visitors here and uplift the local economy,” he said, highlighting the need for large-scale publicity campaigns, cultural festivals, and promotional events.
The Chief Minister also assured that the provincial government would coordinate with the municipality and tourism boards to invest in infrastructure development, improve accessibility, and enhance facilities for pilgrims and tourists alike.
Religious tourism as a driver of local economy
Bagmati Province Minister for Culture and Tourism, Suresh Shrestha, who accompanied the Chief Minister during the Aarati Pooja, also expressed his commitment to prioritizing religious tourism in provincial plans. He noted that Chagunarayan Municipality’s growing popularity as a spiritual destination has already begun to benefit local businesses, including hotels, homestays, and handicraft markets.
The minister added that promoting religious sites such as Pancha Mahalaxmi Mandir and Chagunarayan Temple can create new livelihood opportunities for local communities while also preserving Nepal’s invaluable cultural identity. He urged local residents to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness, hospitality, and the authenticity of cultural practices to ensure a wholesome experience for visitors.
Strengthening Nepal’s cultural identity
The Chief Minister’s remarks also touched upon the broader role of heritage tourism in reinforcing Nepal’s national image as a land of diverse cultures, faiths, and traditions. He stressed that Nepal is already celebrated globally for its natural beauty, but promoting its spiritual and historical sites would allow the country to showcase a more holistic identity to the international audience.
Chagunarayan, according to him, has the potential to be promoted alongside other prominent religious destinations such as Pashupatinath, Muktinath, Janakpur, and Lumbini. By linking these destinations through well-coordinated tourism packages, Nepal could position itself as one of the leading global hubs for cultural and pilgrimage tourism.
Need for sustainable development
While underlining the importance of promotion, Chief Minister Baniya also drew attention to the need for sustainable development practices in the region. He warned that uncontrolled urbanization and neglect of conservation efforts could endanger the fragile heritage structures and natural surroundings of Chagunarayan.
Baniya assured that his government would focus on sustainable tourism strategies that balance economic growth with cultural preservation. Plans include improved road networks, upgraded facilities for pilgrims, and conservation projects for ancient monuments that are vulnerable to decay.
Community participation and future outlook
The Chief Minister concluded his address by calling on the local community, municipal authorities, and private sector stakeholders to work hand-in-hand with the government in advancing Chagunarayan’s tourism future. He reiterated that government efforts alone would not suffice and that collective responsibility is essential to preserve and promote the heritage of the municipality.
With the blessings of the Aarati at Pancha Mahalaxmi Mandir, the event not only highlighted the spiritual vibrance of the area but also symbolized a renewed commitment from provincial leadership towards uplifting Chagunarayan as a unique religious tourism hub.
