Chitwan Triumphs: Successful Rhino Translocation to Eastern Sector

Chitwan National Park has completed this year’s rhino translocation after successfully relocating four rhinos from the western sector to the eastern sector. This year, three female rhinos and one male rhino were transferred to the park. On Monday, a male rhino was translocated from the Namuna Buffer Zone Community Forest in Pithauli to the eastern sector.

According to Abinash Thapa Magar, Information Officer of Chitwan National Park, among the three female rhinos, one was relocated from Namuna Buffer Zone Community Forest in Pithauli, while the other two were brought from the Amaltari area. With the translocation of the female rhino on Tuesday evening, the internal translocation process for this year has been completed.

The relocated rhinos were released in the Khagendramalli area of the eastern sector. The female rhino translocated on Tuesday is estimated to be around 13 years old.

The internal translocation process began on Saturday, during which a 15-year-old female rhino was moved, followed by a 16-year-old female rhino on Sunday, and an 18-year-old male rhino on Monday. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation formed a study team led by Deputy Director General Bed Kumar Dhakal to assess the translocation process.

The study estimated that 60% of the rhino population is in the western sector, while 40% is in the eastern sector. The translocation is expected to help balance the rhino population and promote breeding between rhinos from different areas.

According to the latest census, Nepal has a total of 752 rhinos, with 694 in Chitwan National Park, 38 in Bardiya National Park, 17 in Shuklaphanta National Park, and three in Parsa National Park. Last year, six rhinos were translocated within Chitwan National Park.
