Chitwan National Park has successfully relocated three rhinos from its western sector to the eastern sector. The transfer took place over three days Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
All three rhinos were released in the Khagendramalli area of the eastern sector. According to Park Information Officer Avinash Thapa Magar, a 15-year-old female rhino was relocated on Saturday, a 16-year-old female on Sunday, and an estimated 18-year-old male on Monday.
The male rhino transferred on Monday was brought from the Namuna Buffer Zone Community Forest in Pithauli, while the two female rhinos were relocated from the Amaltari area of the park’s western sector. The rhino that darted on Monday was released the same evening, while the ones that darted on Saturday and Sunday were released the following morning and evening, respectively.
This year, the park aims to relocate four rhinos as part of its internal translocation efforts. Last year, six rhinos were transferred. Based on recommendations from a research team, the park plans to move ten rhinos from the western sector. The technical team began the transfer operation from Amaltari, located in Nawalpur. An additional male rhino is set to be relocated to the eastern sector soon.
