British deaf mountaineer and BBC Sign Language presenter Michael Joseph Woods successfully summited Mount Everest (8,848.86m) on Thursday morning, becoming an inspiration to the global deaf community during one of the busiest summit periods in Everest history.

The 36-year-old climber, who communicates using British Sign Language (BSL), reached the top of the world at 8:25 am Nepal Time on May 21. According to Lakpa Sherpa of 8K Expeditions, Michael Joseph Woods was accompanied during the ascent by experienced climbing guides Phurba Sherpa and Fudorchi Sherpa, along with high-altitude photographer Pasang Aryal.

Everest Sees Record-Breaking Summit Numbers

The successful climb came amid a historic two-day summit surge on Everest. According to Khim Lal Gautam, Michael Joseph Woods was among 154 climbers who reached the summit on May 21. Just a day earlier, on May 20, a total of 274 climbers successfully summited Everest, marking the largest single-day ascent figure in the mountain’s history. Combined, the two-day total surpassed 400 summiters, making it one of the busiest periods ever recorded on Everest.

Seven Summits Mission and Support for Deaf Children

Woods undertook the Everest expedition as part of his “Seven Summits” challenge, an ambitious attempt to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Beyond mountaineering, the expedition also carried a charitable purpose.

Michael Joseph Woods has been raising funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society, an organization that supported his six-year-old son from an early age. During the acclimatization phase of the expedition, Woods also climbed Lobuche Peak before launching his final Everest summit push.
