Ajaymerukot Unearths the Lost History of the Doteli Kingdom

Excavation has begun at Ajaymerukot in Ajaymeru Rural Municipality, which holds the history of the Doteli kingdom. A team from the Archaeological Department started the excavation, funded by a budget of NPR 9 million allocated by the local government. According to Bhaskar Gyawali, the chief archaeologist and director of the department, Ajaymerukot was built in the exquisite artistic style of the Katyuri dynasty.

The current excavation is the first study of the site, revealing distinct artwork and construction styles that reflect the influence of the Katyuri dynasty. During the excavation, the team numbered the ruins and documented the unique architectural style of Ajaymerukot, which differs from the temples east of the Karnali River. The findings indicate a design featuring a mandap (pavilion) with adjacent temples and unique meeting rooms.

Minister for Social Development of Sudurpashchim Province, Saraswati Khadka, emphasized the need for all levels of government to focus on the preservation and promotion of historical and tourist sites like Ajaymerukot.

Ajaymeru Rural Municipality Chairman Umesh Bhatt mentioned the increasing importance of preserving the site, seeking additional budget and support from central and provincial governments.

Local legends suggest that Ajaymerukot was established in the latter half of the 13th century by two brothers of the Katyuri dynasty after defeating the Sinja kingdom. While some believe it was built by King Nagi Mall, evidence confirms it was constructed by the Katyuri rulers.

Historical artifacts such as copper inscriptions from King Niraypaldev and remnants of the ancient palace, temples, and artistic structures are found in the area.

The main palace site is surrounded by the Gad (river) and requires a 15-20 minute uphill climb to reach. The ruins of the palace, once seven stories tall, provide a glimpse into the architectural marvels of the Katyuri dynasty, including temples dedicated to their family deity, Jagdamba Bhagwati.

Additionally, the site features ancient structures, including places for tying horses and tunnels with windows for lighting, which were used by queens for water collection and bathing. The area is known for its historical significance during the Mall era and offers a unique opportunity for archaeological exploration.
