Pokhara, Nepal’s tourism capital, is not only renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty but also for its thrilling adventure activities. Among these, paragliding, ziplining, bungee jumping, skydiving, canoeing, rafting, and hot-air balloon rides have become major attractions for tourists.
Recently, hot air balloon rides have been gaining significant popularity, particularly among tourists from SAARC countries. Chairman of Balloon Nepal Pvt. Ltd., Bikram Bade, revealed that 60% of participants in the balloon flights are tourists from neighboring India, showcasing a growing interest in this unique adventure.
“Pokhara is not just a city of natural wonders but also a hub for adventure activities. Lately, SAARC tourists have been particularly drawn to hot air balloon rides,” said Bade. “The mesmerizing view of sunlight hitting the Himalayan peaks, lush green hills, and serene lakes during the flight makes this experience truly unforgettable for visitors.”
Hot air balloon rides cater to adventure seekers aged five and above, offering an exhilarating and safe experience for physically and mentally fit individuals. Bade emphasized that the rides provide a new gateway to adventure and recreation, positively impacting the local economy. To further boost tourism, an International Balloon Festival is scheduled in Pokhara from December 24 to January 1, featuring night glow shows, tethered rides, musical performances by renowned bands, balloon competitions, DJ music, and more. Pilots from 20 countries will participate in the festival, marking it as a significant international event.
Expanding Pokhara’s Adventure Tourism
President of the Pokhara Tourism Council, Taranath Pahari, highlighted that hot air balloons have successfully attracted not only adventure enthusiasts but also those who wish to soak in Pokhara’s natural beauty. “Pokhara is now recognized as a key city for both natural splendor and adventure activities. Hot air balloons have become a focal point of attraction, especially for SAARC tourists,” he stated.
Pahari further added that hot air balloons play a crucial role in establishing Pokhara as an international adventure tourism destination, contributing to Nepal’s overall tourism growth. Balloon Nepal Pvt. Ltd. ensures that all its balloons meet European safety standards, offering a secure experience for travelers.
History and Current Operations
Hot air balloon flights were first introduced in Nepal in 1991 by Sunrise Balloon in Kathmandu. However, operations ceased in the capital due to increasing air traffic. The concept was revived in Pokhara in 2009/10, with Balloon Nepal Pvt. Ltd. launching commercial flights in 2018. The company now operates three balloons with varying capacities, accommodating five, eight, and twelve passengers each.
Pricing and Packages
The cost for a hot air balloon ride is NPR 11,000 for Nepalis, USD 120 for SAARC nationals, and USD 150 for other foreign tourists. The package includes passenger insurance of USD 20,000, along with a souvenir cap, two-way transportation from Lakeside to the take-off point, photos, videos, and a flight certificate. Private balloon reservations are also available.
Flight Details
Hot air balloon rides last approximately 40 minutes, with flights scheduled from 5 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM to capture the sunrise and sunset views. The rides take off from Lauruk and land in the Changkpur area, maintaining communication with the Pokhara International Airport’s control tower. Although authorized to fly up to 9,000 feet, flights currently operate at an altitude of 6,000 to 7,000 feet.
In 2023, over 2,400 tourists experienced balloon rides in Pokhara. This year, professional pilots from Spain and the UK are leading the operations, ensuring safety and precision. The balloons are inspected for safety prior to each flight, with strict checks on weather and air pressure conditions. Flights are canceled in case of adverse weather, such as rain or strong winds, prioritizing passenger safety.
With its blend of thrills and spectacular views, hot air ballooning in Pokhara offers a one-of-a-kind adventure, drawing tourists from around the globe and solidifying its place on the international tourism map.
