Unveiling Mundhum Trail 2025: A Virgin Destination for Adventure Enthusiasts

Preparations are in full swing to inaugurate the Mundhum Trail Visit Year 2025 on New Year’s Day, January 1. This ambitious tourism campaign aims to attract at least 100,000 visitors by the end of 2025, promoting the newly explored Mundhum Trail, which spans the Bhojpur, Khotang, Solukhumbu, and Sankhuwasabha districts.

The campaign, spearheaded by the Maiyung-Temke-Salpa-Silingchung Tourism Promotion Centre, seeks to spotlight this “virgin destination” for tourists. According to the Centre’s President, Ramesh Rai, the trail is an off-the-beaten-path adventure offering breathtaking views of some of the world’s tallest mountains, including Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) and Kanchenjunga.

Improvements to amenities along the trail are underway to enhance the experience for trekkers. These include installing drinking water facilities, resting spots, toilets, and expanded accommodations such as homestays and guest houses.

Adding to the allure of the Mundhum Trail, the organizers have planned various activities to celebrate the Visit Year. Events such as honey hunting, Ubhauli Sakela, and other cultural festivities will be held throughout the year at different points along the route. Additionally, adventure enthusiasts can look forward to horse riding, film shooting, ultra-marathons, mountain cycling, and unique festivals like the Nachhong (Dhami) Festival, Rudrakshya Festival, and Chakchakur Festival.

The 10-kilometer-long Mundhum Trail, designated as one of Nepal’s 100 newly explored destinations, is set to boost tourism in the Khotang and Bhojpur regions. Highlighting the trail’s potential, Ram Kumar Rai, a parliamentarian from Khotang, emphasized its role in promoting the local economy and culture.

Financial support for upgrading the trail has been a collaborative effort, with 30% funding from the local government, 35% from the provincial government, and 35% from the Swiss government. The trail starts at Tawabhangyanj on the border of Khotang and Bhojpur, winding through spectacular locations such as Temkedanda (3,156 meters) and Salpapokhari (3,750 meters) before culminating at Silingchung (4,165 meters).

The trekking journey takes approximately 10 days for Nepali trekkers and up to 13 days for international visitors to complete. Historically, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary used parts of this trail during their historic 1953 Everest expedition. As 2025 approaches, the Mundhum Trail promises to be an unparalleled destination, combining natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventurous experiences for visitors from around the world.
