Gosaikunda Welcomes Devotees with Free Hot Water on Janai Purnima

In celebration of the sacred Hindu festival of Janai Purnima, thousands of devotees are now making their way to the revered Gosaikunda Lake in Rasuwa district. As per tradition, the Gosaikunda Mela is observed every year from Ekadashi of Shrawan month until the full moon day, drawing in pilgrims from across Nepal and neighboring regions.

This year, a new arrangement has been made to enhance the comfort of pilgrims, free hot water (Tatopani) has been provided to assist them during the harsh cold of the high-altitude lake. According to Sanjeev D.M., Chairman of Gosaikunda Area Development Committee, this facility has been arranged through the initiative of local youth groups from Dhunche.

Sacred Lake Offers Spiritual Cleansing

Located at an altitude of 4,380 meters above sea level, Gosaikunda holds immense religious significance in Hindu mythology. Devotees believe that taking a dip in the icy waters of this lake and performing sacred rituals absolves one of sins, both known and unknown, and leads to spiritual liberation (moksha).

With the start of the pilgrimage season, a continuous stream of devotees has begun making the challenging journey via Dhunche. Chairman D.M. estimates that by Janai Purnima day, approximately 15,000 pilgrims are expected to have taken a holy dip in the sacred lake this year.

Infrastructure and Safety Preparations in Place

To ensure a safe and smooth journey for pilgrims, multiple logistical arrangements and maintenance efforts have been undertaken. The Dhunche to Khanti trail, known for its rugged terrain, has undergone essential repair and sanitation work. Drinking water points have been installed, and temporary shelters have been set up along the route to provide rest and overnight accommodation for the travelers.

Chairman D.M. further informed that medical services have been stationed at various key points, including Buddha Mandir, Cholangpati, Chandanbari, Deurali, Tiwari Bagar, and Dhunche. These outposts are prepared to offer emergency health assistance. Additionally, security arrangements have been enhanced along the route, ensuring a peaceful environment for pilgrims.

Medical and Rescue Support from Various Agencies

In collaboration with various local and national health institutions, the Gosaikunda Mela is also supported by a network of medical and rescue organizations. Himalaya Rescue Association, Panchadham Committee, Green City Hospital (Kathmandu), and the Gosaikunda Rural Municipality are actively involved in providing care to pilgrims.

Moreover, Rasuwa District Hospital, District Ayurvedic Health Center, and the Nepali Army’s medical units are offering treatment services throughout the route. These services are designed to cater to altitude-related illnesses, hypothermia, dehydration, and other medical emergencies that may arise during the high-altitude trek.

District Administration Ensures Full Security

To guarantee the safety of all devotees, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Rasuwa, Arjun Paudel, has deployed adequate numbers of security personnel from Betrabati to Gosaikunda. CDO Paudel has urged all pilgrims to travel with confidence and assured that all necessary support will be provided by local authorities throughout the pilgrimage period.

Echoing similar sentiments, District Police Chief Hem Bahadur Malla advised pilgrims to take special caution while bathing in the extremely cold waters of the high-altitude lake. He stressed that, while Gosaikunda holds deep religious value, safety must not be compromised due to weather conditions and physical stress.

Accessibility and Road Conditions Remain Favorable

Despite the ongoing monsoon, access to the pilgrimage route has largely remained unobstructed. The road from Kathmandu and Prithvi Highway, passing through Galchi to Trishuli Bazaar and onward to Dhunche, is fully operational. From Dhunche, pilgrims must undertake a four-kilometer uphill trek to reach the lake. This portion of the trail has also undergone essential maintenance and cleaning, allowing for a smoother journey.

The Gosaikunda Area Development Committee has extended a heartfelt request to all pilgrims to participate in the festival with devotion and mindfulness, respecting the environment, and cooperating with the authorities.
