Monsoon activity has intensified across Nepal, with widespread cloud cover and rainfall affecting various regions of the country. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division, the current monsoon wind pattern is highly active, especially in the eastern and far-western parts of the country. The Division has forecasted heavy rainfall in Koshi Province and Sudurpaschim Province for today, urging citizens and authorities to remain vigilant.
The Division reported that a low-pressure monsoon trough has shifted northwards, currently lying over the Tarai region of Nepal. This deviation from the normal average position of the monsoon belt has led to increased moisture accumulation in the atmosphere, resulting in overcast conditions and continuous precipitation in many parts of the country. Hilly regions are particularly experiencing widespread cloudiness, with the potential for moderate to heavy showers throughout the day.
Heavy Rainfall Likely in Select Provinces
In its daily bulletin, the Weather Forecasting Division highlighted that both Koshi and Sudurpaschim provinces are under a high alert for heavy downpours. These regions are expected to receive significant rainfall due to the enhanced monsoon circulation. Residents living in flood-prone and landslide-susceptible areas, particularly in the hills and foothills, are strongly advised to exercise caution and take necessary preventive measures.
Besides Koshi and Sudurpaschim, parts of Madhes Province are already experiencing moderate rainfall. The pattern is expected to continue, affecting daily life and increasing risks of localized flooding. In addition, moderate rainfall is also predicted in various hilly areas within Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces as the monsoon clouds continue to develop and spread.
The Division has urged people living in hilly areas and riverbanks to stay alert, especially during nighttime when visibility is low and sudden landslides or water level surges can be more dangerous.
Cloudy Skies and Transport Disruptions
The widespread monsoon cloud cover has impacted visibility in several areas, posing challenges for transportation and aviation services. The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and other domestic airports are expected to experience delays due to low visibility and wet runways. Authorities have advised airlines to ensure safety measures and monitor weather updates before initiating flights.
Road transportation, especially in mountainous and rural areas, is also likely to face disruptions. Landslides and muddy roads are a recurring problem during this season, and transport operators have been asked to coordinate with local administrations to ensure passenger safety. Drivers are advised to avoid traveling during heavy downpours or nighttime in risk-prone areas.
Health and Daily Life Precautions
The Department has also issued an advisory urging the public to take necessary precautions concerning health and hygiene. Continuous rainfall and damp conditions increase the risk of waterborne diseases, infections, and vector-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria. The public is requested to use clean drinking water, wear appropriate rain gear, and avoid wading through floodwater to minimize exposure to contaminated water.
Children, elderly people, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable during the monsoon season. Local health posts and hospitals have been asked to stay prepared for potential outbreaks and emergency cases resulting from monsoon-related health complications.
Emergency Services and Local Readiness
The Ministry of Home Affairs has been coordinating with provincial and local disaster management committees to ensure rapid response in case of emergencies. Relief materials, including food, medicine, and temporary shelter items, have been pre-positioned in various regions. Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army personnel are on standby in disaster-prone districts.
In addition, the Meteorological Division has emphasized the need for constant monitoring of water levels in major rivers such as the Koshi, Karnali, Mahakali, and others, which could swell rapidly due to upstream rainfall. Early warning systems have been activated in several districts where the risk of flash floods or riverine floods is higher.
