Rasuwa’s revered pilgrimage site, Gosainkunda, has become the focal point of an extensive search and rescue operation after a pilgrim went missing along the challenging trekking route. The missing individual has been identified as 60-year-old Krishna Bahadur Magar, a resident of Dhulikhel Municipality–3 in Kavrepalanchok district.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Hem Bahadur Shahi, Magar was reported missing by his fellow pilgrims Ram Kumar Dhakal and Arjun Bik, who had been traveling with him on the religious journey. The group had been trekking towards the sacred Gosainkunda Lake when Magar disappeared on Shrawan 23 (August 8), somewhere between Chandanbari and Cholangpati, a section known for its dense forest and rugged terrain.

Disappearance in a Remote and Risky Section

The stretch between Chandanbari and Cholangpati lies within the Langtang National Park area and is characterized by steep paths, thick vegetation, and unpredictable weather conditions. Trekkers often pass through this section on their way to Gosainkunda, a site of immense spiritual significance for Hindus and Buddhists alike, especially during Janai Purnima and other religious festivals.

Magar’s companions stated in their police report that they had been walking together but became separated during the trek. They realized Magar was missing after reaching a designated rest spot and waiting for him, but he failed to arrive. After unsuccessful attempts to locate him themselves, they decided to contact the authorities.

Immediate Mobilization of Search Teams

Upon receiving the missing person report, police immediately deployed a specialized search and rescue team led by Inspector Raju Shah. The operation includes 45 security personnel from various agencies, comprising officers from the Armed Police Force (APF), soldiers from the Shreenath Battalion of the Nepal Army, and members of the Nepal Police.

DSP Shahi confirmed that the rescue team is conducting a coordinated search effort, covering the forested slopes, narrow trails, and potential shelter spots along the route. The challenging terrain and dense vegetation are making the operation slow and meticulous. Search personnel are also alert to possible hazards such as landslides, wild animals, and sudden weather shifts, which could have contributed to Magar’s disappearance.

Support from Local Communities

Local residents, hotel operators, and trekking guides in the region have been informed about the situation and requested to assist in the search. People living along the trail are on alert to report any sighting or sign of the missing pilgrim. The operation is also supported by Langtang National Park staff, who are familiar with the area’s trails and terrain.

Gosainkunda lies at an altitude of about 4,380 meters and attracts thousands of devotees each year, especially during the monsoon period when Janai Purnima is celebrated. While the pilgrimage is spiritually rewarding, it is also physically demanding and requires careful preparation due to the high-altitude conditions and unpredictable mountain weather.

Potential Risks and Challenges

Authorities noted that the section where Magar disappeared is particularly risky because of its isolation. In monsoon season, fog and rain can severely reduce visibility, increasing the likelihood of losing the trail. Additionally, mobile network coverage in the area is patchy, making communication difficult in emergencies.

Rescue personnel are using whistles, loud calls, and flashlights to aid in locating Magar. The teams are moving systematically, sweeping both sides of the trail and nearby off-route areas where someone might wander or seek shelter. Despite adverse weather, the search continues uninterrupted, with plans to expand the radius if no immediate signs are found.

Emotional Distress for Family and Friends

Magar’s family in Kavrepalanchok has been informed of the incident, and relatives are anxiously awaiting updates from the search teams. Fellow pilgrims and locals have expressed concern and hope that Magar will be found safe. The missing pilgrim is described as physically fit for his age and accustomed to walking long distances, which gives rescuers some optimism.

Ongoing Investigation and Appeal for Information

While the primary focus remains on the search and rescue mission, police have also appealed to anyone who might have been on the Chandanbari–Cholangpati route on Saun 23 to come forward with any information. Trekkers, porters, and locals who may have seen Magar are being urged to contact the nearest police post or inform the rescue team directly.

Authorities have assured that all available resources will be mobilized until the missing pilgrim is located. The operation will continue into the coming days with the hope of bringing the case to a safe and positive conclusion.
