Bukki, a scenic plateau nestled in the Dhorpatan region of Nepal, has recently become a popular destination for tourists. Known for its lush greenery, rugged terrain, and picturesque landscapes, Bukki has been attracting visitors eager to experience its natural beauty and traditional lifestyle.
Located in Dhorpatan, Nepal’s only hunting reserve, Bukki is gaining prominence among both domestic and international tourists. Once predominantly a grazing area for sheep and goats, the region has evolved into a significant attraction due to its increasing visibility on social media. Over the past decade, the area has seen a surge in tourist activity, especially during the monsoon season when the landscape is at its most vibrant.
The trek to Bukki starts from the Dhorpatan valley, situated approximately 2,900 meters above sea level. Visitors must embark on a 3 to 5-hour hike to reach Bukki, which lies between 2,900 and 4,500 meters in altitude. The plateau is known for its temporary settlements of shepherds and their herds of sheep and goats.
During the monsoon season, Bukki is bustling with activity, offering tourists a chance to witness lush meadows, traditional pastoral life, and stunning mountain views. In contrast, the winter months see a decline in visitor numbers as the area becomes less accessible due to snow.
Bukki’s appeal lies in its natural beauty and the opportunity it provides to experience traditional shepherd life. Tourists have the chance to see the local way of life up close, including their seasonal migrations and daily routines. Attractions in Bukki include areas such as Gorpachhenda, Dahkhark, Tikadhara, Rajwan, Syachun, Furse Deurali, and Faguane Deurali.
Local businessman Sandesh Thapa, who has been instrumental in promoting Bukki, reports that he has accommodated around 500 tourists in the past few months alone. He has introduced a “Gothste” (shepherd stay) service to provide tourists with a unique lodging experience in traditional shepherd huts.
According to Thapa, the recent rise in tourist visits is attributed to the widespread sharing of videos and photos on social media, which has sparked greater interest in Bukki. The number of visitors to Dhorpatan, and specifically Bukki, has significantly increased, with hundreds arriving monthly.
Jeevan Pun, President of the Dhorpatan Valley Hotel Association, notes that Bukki has become a favored destination among tourists. He also highlights the need for preparation as visitors often experience altitude sickness. Pun advises tourists to be cautious and well-prepared for the trek, especially since the journey to Bukki can be challenging.
Tourists like Samita Arges from Galkot have praised Bukki for its breathtaking views and serene environment. Despite the physical strain of the hike, Arges found the experience rewarding and suggested that better signage could improve navigation for future visitors.
With its growing popularity, Bukki is on its way to becoming a top tourist destination in Nepal. As more people discover its charm, the region is poised to gain recognition as a must-visit spot, enhancing Dhorpatan’s appeal and contributing to the local economy.
