Helicopter Flights Suspended in Khumbu Region Amid Security Concerns

The Airlines Operators Association of Nepal has announced the suspension of helicopter flights in the Khumbu region, citing unresolved security issues. In a press release issued today, the association stated that flights in the area will remain grounded until full security assurances are provided.

“Effective from January 5, all helicopter flights in the Khumbu region have been suspended due to the lack of adequate security guarantees. Stall aviation companies operating in the area are also advised to cease their flights if security concerns persist,” the statement read.

This decision follows a ban imposed by Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, and local youth groups on helicopter flights and landings within the park from January 1. The groups highlighted the detrimental impact of such activities on the park’s forest, wildlife habitat, and overall environment.

Despite repeated discussions between the association’s representatives and concerned authorities, no resolution has been reached. The association also reported disruptions at Khumbu’s heliports, where flags have been placed to block operations.

The ongoing suspension underscores the urgent need for collaborative solutions to balance tourism-related activities with environmental and security considerations in the Khumbu region.
