Kippa Lhamu Sherpa Honored As Youngest Climber From Makalu To Summit World’s 5th Highest Peak

Kippa Lhamu Sherpa, a 28-year-old mountaineer from Nurbu village in Makalu Rural Municipality-2, Sankhuwasabha, has been honored for becoming the youngest climber from her area to successfully summit Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world at 8,485 meters. She reached the summit on April 10 (Chaitra 28) at exactly 10:10 AM, along with a nine-member team assigned to open the climbing route.

The recognition ceremony took place in Khandbari, where Ward Chairperson Chhopal Sherpa presented the honor on behalf of the local government. Kippa’s climb not only marks a personal achievement but also brings pride to her community, which has produced over two dozen mountaineers.

Born on March 15, 2053, B.S. (January 28, 1997), Kippa comes from a family deeply rooted in mountaineering. Her husband and all four of her brothers are also climbers, having successfully summited various Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest. She credits their achievements as her main source of inspiration.

This was not her first encounter with Mount Makalu. A year earlier, she spent 45 days at the mountain’s base camp, gaining valuable experience that prepared her for the successful ascent this year. Her expedition expenses were managed by Seven Summit Treks, a prominent expedition organizing company. Kippa’s feat highlights the growing representation of female climbers in Nepal’s mountaineering scene, and she serves as a role model for young women aspiring to take on high-altitude challenges.
