A rescue and recovery team has retrieved the body of a South Korean trekker who fell to his death in the Everest region, authorities confirmed today. According to police, the deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Lim Chungman from the Republic of Korea. His body was discovered at an altitude of approximately 5,400 metres near the Khongma La Pass along the trekking route to Lobuche.
Rescue Mission Led by IFMGA Guide
The recovery operation was led by an experienced guide affiliated with the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA). The team, headed by Riten Jangbu Sherpa, included Tenzing Jangbu Sherpa, Dawa Tshering Sherpa, and Nima Dorje Sherpa.

The team was mobilised following a request from the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality after the trekker had gone missing. After an extensive search operation in challenging high-altitude terrain, the team located Lim’s body near a cliff area. Police said preliminary findings suggest that the trekker may have fallen around 40 metres from a steep section near the pass, leading to his death.
Missing Since Saturday
Lim Chungman had been reported missing since Saturday. He was last seen at a hotel in Chukhung, a popular stop for trekkers heading toward the Everest Base Camp and surrounding high passes. Authorities noted that Lim was trekking alone without a guide, which may have increased the risks associated with navigating difficult and high-altitude terrain in the Everest region. Police have reiterated warnings that solo trekking in such remote and hazardous areas can be dangerous, especially in unpredictable mountain conditions.
Personal Belongings Recovered
During the recovery operation, the team also found several of Lim’s personal belongings at the incident site, including his camera, mobile phone, laptop, and drone. These items are expected to assist authorities in reconstructing the circumstances leading up to the incident. Officials stated that further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events. However, no foul play is suspected at this stage, and the case appears to be a tragic accident.
Trek Details and Travel History
Immigration and trekking records show that Lim had arrived in Kathmandu from Incheon International Airport on March 31 via a Korean Air flight. He officially entered the Sagarmatha National Park on April 6 to begin his trek toward the Everest Base Camp. According to records, he had planned to stay in Nepal for over a month and had a return flight scheduled for May 6. His trek was part of a solo travel in one of the world’s most popular trekking destinations.
Body Being Brought to Kathmandu
Police confirmed that the body is being transported to Kathmandu for postmortem examination. Necessary legal procedures will be carried out before handing over the body to the concerned authorities and the family.
The incident has once again highlighted the inherent risks of high-altitude trekking in Nepal’s Himalayan region. While the Everest region attracts thousands of trekkers every year, officials stress the importance of proper preparation, experienced guidance, and adherence to safety measures. Authorities have urged trekkers to prioritise safety by hiring licensed guides, staying on designated trails, and maintaining regular communication with local authorities or trekking agencies.

Renewed Call for Safety Awareness
In the wake of the incident, tourism and security officials have renewed calls for increased awareness regarding trekking safety. With the spring trekking season currently underway, a large number of domestic and international visitors are travelling to high-altitude destinations across Nepal.
Experts emphasise that while trekking offers unparalleled natural beauty and adventure, it also demands careful planning, physical preparedness, and respect for mountain environments. The tragic death of Lim Chungman serves as a sobering reminder of the risks involved and the need for vigilance in one of the world’s most iconic yet challenging trekking regions.
