The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, has stated that the government has set a target to bring 2.3 million tourists to the Maldives by 2025. He mentioned that extensive efforts are being made to achieve this goal.

Addressing the first session of the Maldives’ unicameral legislature, the People’s Majlis, for 2025, Muizzu noted that in 2024, the Maldives attracted 2 million tourists for the first time and saw a 9% increase in tourist arrivals compared to 2023. He called 2024 a historic year for tourism in the Maldives and stated that this momentum would be expanded in 2025.

To meet the 2025 tourism target, the government plans to create resorts on islands that previously didn’t attract tourists, offering incentives and benefits to encourage investment and turn them into beautiful tourist destinations. The government is also planning to expand the international routes of the national airline to more destinations to increase tourist arrivals, Muizzu said.

Additionally, President Muizzu mentioned that the Maldives would be purchasing more wide-body aircraft in October this year, and direct flights would be introduced from the Maldives to European destinations, making it easier for European visitors to travel to the country.
