Minister Badri Prasad Pandey Highlights Sports Tourism as a Path to Strengthen Nepal-China Relations

Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, emphasized the potential of sports tourism in boosting Nepal-China relations and accelerating the pace of development during the inauguration of a ‘cross-country relay’ event today. The event was organized collaboratively by Pokhara Metropolitan City (PMC), the Chinese Embassy, and the Himalayan Tourism Forum.

Minister Pandey expressed his belief that Chinese tourists deeply appreciate Nepal’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. He also mentioned the government’s plans to declare 2025 as the Nepal-China Tourism Year, aiming to increase Chinese visitors to Nepal, with a reciprocal effect for Nepali tourists visiting China.

“Through such sports events, we hope to foster greater interaction between Nepali and Chinese people, which will further enhance our relations,” Minister Pandey remarked.

In addition to his comments on tourism, the Minister provided updates on the government’s plans to enhance infrastructure, including the introduction of regular international flights at Pokhara International Airport and the streamlined operation of the Korala border point.

Highlighting Nepal’s importance as a religious tourism hub, Minister Pandey reminded attendees of key religious sites such as Muktinath, Pashupatinath, Lumbini, and Janaki Temple, which are must-visit destinations for tourists from around the world.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, also addressed the gathering, noting that sports events involving both Nepali and Chinese athletes have been held in various cities across Nepal for the past two years. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to strengthen Nepal-China relations through cultural and sports exchanges. Ambassador Song revealed that the next edition of the cross-country relay would be held on a grand scale in 2025, marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Nepal-China diplomatic ties.

PMC Mayor Dhanraj Acharya expressed his optimism about the event’s impact on tourism, stating that the competition would play a pivotal role in boosting Nepal-China tourism activities. The event featured a variety of sports, including sprint races, mountain races, cycling, trail running, and rowing, all aimed at fostering friendly competition and further enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations.
