Mundhum Trail Tourism Year 2025 Officially Launched

The celebration of Kirat Yele Dong (Kirat Era) 5085 marked the official launch of the ‘Mundhum Trail Visit Year 2025.’ The inauguration took place at Chakewa Bhanjyang, located on the border of Khotang and Bhojpur, by the Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, and former minister Sudan Kirati.

On this occasion, local governments along the Mundhum Trail announced various festivals tailored to the year-long celebration. Ramesh Rai, the chairperson of the Maiyung-Temke-Salpa-Silichung Tourism Promotion Center, stated that cultural and tourism-related events will be organized seasonally to promote the Mundhum Trail Visit Year 2025.

Local Celebrations and Events

On the first day (Tuesday), Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality in Bhojpur launched a five-day festival at Chakewa Bhanjyang, running until January 19. The festival features local cuisines, cultural showcases from diverse ethnic groups, and an agricultural exhibition to attract tourists.

In Khotang, various municipalities are hosting vibrant festivals to showcase local culture. Diktil Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality is organizing the Red Panda and Thar Festival, while Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality presents the Honey Hunting and Goth Stay Festival. Sakela Rural Municipality is celebrating the Udhauli–Ubhauli Sakela along with other cultural events, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s rich traditions and heritage.

Bhojpur’s municipalities have organized a variety of exciting events, such as an ultra-marathon and mountain cycling in Bhojpur Municipality, the Nacchong Dhami Literature Festival in Salpa Silichung Rural Municipality, the Rudraksha Festival in Shadanand Municipality, and the Chakchakur Festival in Mahakulung Rural Municipality. These activities aim to promote local culture and tourism, offering visitors a chance to experience the region’s natural beauty and rich traditions.

Promoting Mundhum Trail as a Virgin Destination

Rai highlighted the government’s inclusion of the Mundhum Trail in the list of 100 tourist destinations, aiming to draw approximately 100,000 visitors during the Visit Year. The trail, located across Khotang, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, and Sankhuwasabha districts, reflects the historical and cultural essence of the Kirat community. It was officially designated as a trekking route on January 5, 2019.

Stretching from Tavabhanjyang in Sakela Rural Municipality-3 to the majestic peaks of Temke Danda (3,165 meters), Salpa Pokhari (3,750 meters), and Silichung (4,165 meters), the Mundhum Trail takes around 13 days for international trekkers and 10 days for domestic travelers to complete.

Nature, Culture, and Uniqueness

The trail provides a seamless experience for nature enthusiasts, offering stunning vistas of lush greenery, rolling hills, and a pristine environment. The Mundhum Trail passes through Kirat settlements where the rich traditions, oral literature, and lifestyles of the community are vividly portrayed.

Adorned with expansive grasslands, pasturelands, and opportunities for horseback riding, the trail captivates both domestic and international tourists. It boasts a diverse ecosystem with rhododendrons, champ, katus, lokta, medicinal herbs, and dense forests teeming with wildlife such as red pandas, cliff bees, and various bird species.

The Has Pokhari in the Maiyung area is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts, while the local shepherds and communities provide warm hospitality with food and accommodation, ensuring visitors enjoy a comfortable and memorable experience.

Amidst the region’s untouched beauty, the Mundhum Trail offers much more than just adventure it is deeply embedded in cultural and spiritual traditions. Rooted in the indigenous beliefs and rituals of the Limbu community, the Mundhum, an ancient spiritual and philosophical system, plays a vital role in shaping the region’s identity.
