NATTA and STP Launch Four-Day Culture & Heritage Tourism Training in Kathmandu

The Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), in collaboration with the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP), a joint initiative of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), officially launched a four-day Culture & Heritage Tourism Training in Kathmandu from February 24, 2026. The training program aims to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of tourism professionals in Nepal, focusing on cultural and heritage tourism development.

Intensive Training for Tourism Professionals

More than 40 NATTA members are participating in this intensive program designed to strengthen their understanding of Nepalese culture, heritage, and tourism products. The training is expected to equip participants with practical tools to design, promote, and manage cultural tourism experiences that align with sustainable and responsible tourism practices.

NATTA

The program was formally inaugurated by NATTA President Mr. Kumar Mani Thapaliya, who delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of professional development for the country’s tourism stakeholders. He emphasized that enhancing cultural tourism knowledge is critical for preserving Nepal’s rich heritage while promoting it responsibly to both domestic and international tourists.

Expert Insights from NTB

Mr. Dharma Dawadi from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) also attended the inauguration and shared his insights on the significance of such training programs. He stressed that developing expertise in cultural and heritage tourism is essential for Nepal’s tourism industry to grow sustainably. According to Mr. Dawadi, understanding both tangible and intangible heritage elements allows tour operators to design authentic experiences while contributing to the preservation of Nepal’s unique cultural identity.

Comprehensive Curriculum

The four-day training program covers a wide range of topics essential for cultural tourism. Participants will explore the Geography of Kathmandu and Nepalese Culture, Foundations of Nepalese History, Tangible & Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Art and Architecture in Tourism.

A key focus of the program is the Seven Monument Zones of Kathmandu Valley, where participants will gain hands-on understanding of historical sites, urban heritage, and traditional architecture. The training also includes modules on Major Religions in Nepal, Applied Storytelling, and Packaging of Cultural Tourism Products, enabling participants to effectively create tour itineraries that integrate cultural narratives and heritage sites.

STP

According to the organizers, the curriculum is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, allowing participants to learn how to transform Nepal’s rich cultural heritage into marketable tourism experiences.

Coordination and Leadership

The program is coordinated by NATTA Executive Member Mrs. Shradha Joshi, who emphasized the importance of such professional development programs in building a skilled workforce for Nepal’s tourism sector. Mrs. Joshi noted that cultural tourism is one of Nepal’s fastest-growing segments, and trained professionals are essential for promoting sustainable tourism while preserving cultural integrity.

She added that programs like this also foster collaboration between tourism stakeholders, heritage experts, and local communities, ensuring that tourism development benefits both operators and host communities.

Promoting Sustainable Cultural Tourism

The training initiative reflects a growing focus on sustainable tourism practices in Nepal. By educating tour operators about cultural heritage, storytelling, and heritage site management, the program aims to ensure that tourism growth does not compromise historical preservation.

UNDP, as a partner of STP, has provided technical support for integrating sustainability principles into the curriculum, emphasizing low-impact tourism, responsible visitor behavior, and community engagement. These measures aim to strengthen Nepal’s reputation as a global cultural tourism destination while safeguarding the authenticity of its cultural heritage.

Strengthening Nepal’s Tourism Industry

The organizers of the training program believe that empowering tourism professionals with skills in cultural interpretation, heritage site management, and product development will significantly contribute to the growth of Nepal’s tourism industry. Participants are expected to apply their learning to design enriched itineraries, responsibly promote heritage tourism, and provide memorable experiences for visitors while supporting local communities.

The four-day Culture & Heritage Tourism Training by NATTA and STP is a timely initiative as Nepal continues to expand its cultural tourism offerings, attract international tourists, and position itself as a sustainable and heritage-friendly destination in South Asia.
