Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, has expressed optimism about the strengthening of Nepal-China tourism ties, with expectations of an increase in Chinese tourist arrivals in the coming days. His remarks came during a meeting with a high-level Chinese delegation led by Chinese Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Pan Yue, at the Ministry on Monday.
During the discussion, Minister Pandey emphasized the significance of Nepal’s tourism sector and its deepening cooperation with China. He shared that he has had multiple discussions with the Chinese ambassador regarding the development of Nepalese tourism and expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese government for declaring 2025 as ‘Visit Nepal Year’ to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Nepal’s Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Minister Pandey reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the One China Policy and highlighted the importance of collaboration in the tourism sector. He expressed confidence that Nepal-China tourism cooperation will reach new heights with increasing numbers of Chinese tourists visiting Nepal.
A significant aspect of the meeting was Nepal’s plan to enhance connectivity with China through direct flights. Minister Pandey announced that Nepal Airlines is working towards operating a direct flight between Guangzhou and Kathmandu, while Himalaya Airlines is preparing to launch flights connecting Pokhara and Lhasa. These initiatives are expected to significantly boost tourist flow and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.
China’s Support for Nepal’s Tourism and Cultural Heritage
Chinese Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Pan Yue, reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s tourism industry. He emphasized the need for both nations to implement previous agreements made by their leaders to foster long-term cooperation. Minister Yue also highlighted the importance of cultural and ideological exchanges, stating that the Chinese Communist Party seeks to integrate both modern and traditional philosophies to promote peaceful growth.
China’s rich cultural and historical ties with Nepal were also underscored during the meeting. Minister Yue acknowledged Nepal’s historical and spiritual significance as the birthplace of Gautam Buddha and noted that China has a Buddhist population of over 100 million. This shared cultural heritage presents vast opportunities for religious and spiritual tourism between the two nations.
Boosting Tourism Through Improved Connectivity and Infrastructure
Recognizing the potential for Nepal to become a preferred destination for Chinese tourists, both sides agreed on the necessity of infrastructure development to accommodate growing tourist numbers. Improved air connectivity, enhanced hospitality services, and streamlined visa procedures were highlighted as crucial factors in facilitating travel between the two countries.

China has been a major source of international visitors to Nepal, particularly for cultural tourism, trekking, and pilgrimage tours. With increasing Chinese outbound tourism, Nepal aims to capitalize on this trend by promoting its diverse offerings, including Buddhist heritage sites, adventure tourism, and cultural experiences.
Visit Nepal Year 2025: A Milestone in Nepal-China Relations
The declaration of 2025 as ‘Visit Nepal Year’ by the Chinese government is seen as a major milestone in Nepal-China relations. This initiative is expected to increase Chinese tourist arrivals and attract investments in Nepal’s tourism sector. Nepalese officials are hopeful that the campaign will contribute significantly to Nepal’s economic growth by creating employment opportunities and expanding the tourism industry.
Minister Pandey highlighted Nepal’s rich tourism potential, ranging from the towering Himalayas to UNESCO-listed cultural sites, and stated that Nepal is ready to welcome more visitors from China. He also emphasized that religious and cultural tourism, particularly focused on Buddhism, could serve as a bridge to further deepen bilateral ties.
Future Prospects and Collaboration
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing their commitment to strengthening Nepal-China cooperation in tourism and cultural exchange. Discussions on joint promotional campaigns, infrastructure development, and knowledge sharing were put forward as key strategies to ensure sustained growth in tourism relations.
Nepal’s government is actively working towards improving tourism infrastructure, including the expansion of international airports and enhancement of services to provide a seamless experience for visitors. The promotion of Buddhist circuits and historical sites associated with Gautam Buddha is expected to be a major attraction for Chinese tourists in the future.
With continuous efforts from both Nepal and China, tourism ties between the two nations are set to reach new heights, benefiting not only the tourism sector but also fostering deeper cultural and economic cooperation.
