The Embassy of Nepal, in collaboration with the Embassy of Sri Lanka, celebrated International Buddha Jayanti, also observed globally as the International Day of Vesak, through a special ceremony held at Thailand’s historic and world-renowned Buddhist temple, Wat Pho.
The event brought together distinguished guests including ambassadors from various countries, representatives of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), officials from the Government of Thailand, diplomats, Buddhist scholars, religious teachers, academics, and members of the Nepali and Sri Lankan communities residing in Thailand.
Organizers said the programme aimed to promote the universal teachings of Lord Buddha and strengthen international friendship, peace, and cultural cooperation through shared Buddhist heritage.
Ambassadors Emphasize Relevance of Buddha’s Teachings
During the ceremony, the ambassadors of Nepal and Sri Lanka delivered welcome remarks and extended their best wishes on the occasion of Vesak.
In their addresses, the diplomats highlighted the continuing relevance of Buddha’s teachings in today’s world, emphasizing their importance in promoting peace, tolerance, compassion, sustainability, and moral living amid growing global challenges.
They stated that the principles of non-violence, harmony, mindfulness, and ethical conduct taught by Lord Buddha remain essential in addressing contemporary issues such as conflict, social division, environmental degradation, and humanitarian crises.
The speakers also stressed the importance of preserving and promoting Buddhist heritage sites and strengthening cultural and spiritual exchanges among Buddhist nations.
Senior Buddhist Monks Deliver Spiritual Discourses
The programme featured a special address by the chief monk of Wat Pho, His Excellency Somdet Phra Mahathirachan Thero, who shared spiritual reflections on the significance of Vesak and the timeless relevance of Buddhist philosophy.
The ceremony also included flower offerings and Buddha worship rituals conducted by monk Pahalawela Dhammakitti Thero of Mahachulalongkorn University.
Similarly, a religious sermon was delivered by Abbot Monk Fr. Anil Sakya Thero, assistant of Wat Bovoronives Vihar. In his Dharmadeshana, he emphasized how Buddha’s teachings can provide guidance in addressing major global challenges, including the pursuit of peace, environmental protection, social harmony, and ethical leadership.
The speakers encouraged individuals and societies to embrace compassion, mindfulness, and responsibility in both personal and public life.
Healing Sound and Meditation Sessions Draw Attention
Adding a unique cultural and spiritual dimension to the programme, Nepal’s singing bowl expert, musician, and sound therapy practitioner Mr. Aman Shahi presented a special Healing Sound session.
The performance, featuring traditional Himalayan singing bowls and meditative sound therapy techniques, created a peaceful atmosphere and was warmly appreciated by attendees.
Meanwhile, a meditation session was conducted by Abbot Monk Phra Bhavajrajan (Ajan Kewli) Thero of Wat Pa Nanachat International Forest Vihara. Participants took part in guided meditation focused on inner peace, mindfulness, and spiritual well-being.
Organizers said the meditation and sound healing sessions reflected the deeper spiritual essence of Buddha Jayanti and encouraged participants to reconnect with values of peace, balance, and compassion.
Celebration Strengthens Cultural and Spiritual Ties
The joint celebration by the Nepalese and Sri Lankan embassies highlighted the strong cultural and spiritual ties shared by Buddhist communities across Asia.
Participants described the event as a meaningful occasion that not only honored the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha but also promoted intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding among nations.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for global peace, harmony, and prosperity, reaffirming the enduring relevance of Buddha’s teachings in fostering a more compassionate and sustainable world.
