The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with national and international partners, is set to organize the 2nd Lumbini International Peace Festival from March 20 to May 12, 2025. The grand festival will be held at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini and surrounding areas, aiming to promote Lumbini as a global hub for peace and spiritual tourism. With a blend of cultural, religious, and sports events, the festival seeks to strengthen Nepal’s diplomatic and cultural ties with China and other nations, fostering harmony through diverse activities.

Speaking about the event, Mr. Deepak Raj Joshi, CEO of NTB, emphasized its significance, stating, “The festival underscores Nepal’s commitment to global peace and cultural harmony. We welcome visitors worldwide to experience it’s spiritual essence and unity.” The festival aims to showcase Lumbini not just as the birthplace of Lord Buddha but also as a sanctuary for mindfulness, meditation, and global solidarity.

Key Highlights of the Festival

Opening Ceremony & Meditation Festival (March 21, 2025)

The festival officially commences with a grand Opening Ceremony and Meditation Festival at the Sacred Garden in Lumbini. This spiritual gathering will bring together 100 monks and 400 meditation practitioners near the revered Maya Devi Temple. The event will focus on fostering peace through deep meditation, chanting, and prayers, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to experience tranquility in the heart of Buddhism’s birthplace.

3rd Lumbini International Peace Marathon (March 22, 2025)

Marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the 3rd Lumbini International Peace Marathon will take place on March 22, 2025. This sporting event will include competitive races, a community fun run, and a Peace Walkathon, encouraging participants to embrace fitness and unity through sports. The marathon will witness runners from various countries joining hands in promoting the message of peace and friendship.

Lumbini Peace Concert (March 22, 2025, Evening)

As the sun sets on March 22, the Lumbini Peace Concert will take center stage at Lumbini Square Theatre. This cultural extravaganza will feature mesmerizing performances by the Nangqian Arts Troupe from China and talented Nepalese artists, showcasing a fusion of traditional and contemporary art forms. The concert aims to celebrate cultural exchange through music and dance, symbolizing the unifying power of the arts.

Special Commemorative Events & Grand Closing (May 11-12, 2025)

The festival will conclude with Special Commemorative Events on May 11-12, 2025, celebrating 25 years of the Zhong Hua Monastery, one of the most significant Chinese monasteries in Lumbini. The closing ceremonies will include a photo exhibition showcasing the monastery’s history, a Buddha ordination ceremony, and various interactive sessions for devotees and visitors. The festival’s grand closing will coincide with Vesak Day, the most sacred Buddhist festival, marking the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha.
