For the first time in its history, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has announced its annual budget at the beginning of the fiscal year. The budget for FY 2082/83 has been set at an ambitious Rs 1.59 billion, with a strong focus on tourism infrastructure development, market promotion, branding, and disaster preparedness. Rishi Ram Bhandari, the coordinator of the budget formation sub-committee, confirmed the announcement and emphasized the significance of timely budget declaration.
Strategic Allocation to Boost Market Promotion and Branding
Out of the total budget, Rs 436.1 million has been allocated for tourism market promotion, signaling NTB’s aggressive push to elevate Nepal’s presence in international travel markets. In addition, Rs 129.5 million is designated for public relations and communications, a critical pillar in promoting Nepal as a safe and attractive destination. A further Rs 26.7 million has been allotted for research, planning, and monitoring to ensure data-driven decision-making and the effectiveness of promotional activities.
Tourism Infrastructure and Resource Development Take Center Stage
The NTB has earmarked Rs 186.3 million for the development of tourism resources, ensuring that key tourist sites and new destinations are improved and diversified. Another Rs 91.9 million will support the implementation and monitoring of the Trekking Information Management System (TIMS), enhancing safety and record-keeping for trekkers. These investments are aligned with the broader vision of improving infrastructure to provide a more enriching and safe experience for visitors.
Strengthening Regional Operations with Decentralized Funding
The Gandaki Province Office in Pokhara has received a substantial Rs 116.6 million allocation, while Rs 111.2 million has been reserved for other regional and international offices. This move underscores NTB’s commitment to strengthening its presence beyond the Kathmandu Valley, ensuring robust tourism promotion at the local and global levels. Programs like the Pokhara Street Festival and Pokhara Travel Mart will continue to receive institutional support, along with new tourism trail developments.
Promoting Events and Disaster Risk Preparedness
NTB will allocate Rs 46.2 million toward organizing special events and travel marts, which are essential for showcasing Nepal’s tourism offerings to global stakeholders. A notable Rs 114.8 million has been allocated for disaster risk management and contingency planning, recognizing the importance of resilience in the face of natural calamities. NTB also plans to collaborate with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Rs 60 million worth of matching fund projects that support sustainable tourism development.
Expanding Global Outreach Through Major Travel Fairs
To strengthen Nepal’s presence in international markets, NTB will participate in global travel events including WTM London, ITB Berlin, ATM Dubai, Tourism Expo Japan (JATA) 2025, ITB China 2026, OTM Mumbai, and SATTE New Delhi. These fairs will serve as platforms to showcase Nepal’s diverse tourism experiences, cultural richness, and adventure opportunities. NTB also plans sales missions in ASEAN countries, China, India, and South Asia.
Next-Level Branding Through Innovative Promotion Channels
As part of its branding strategy, NTB is turning to diaspora tourism, film and OTT partnerships, digital and influencer marketing, and content creation. PR agencies will be hired in strategic markets like Europe, China, and India to deliver targeted messaging and amplify Nepal’s tourism narrative. These initiatives aim to attract a wider and more diversified tourist demographic.
Administrative and Operational Enhancements
The budget has also provided for Rs 30 million to support the Executive Secretariat and Committee, while Rs 262.7 million is allocated for administrative and operational costs at the central office. This ensures that NTB has the structural and functional capacity to deliver on its ambitious programs throughout the fiscal year.
Special Events to Spotlight Nepal’s Unique Offerings
Among the thematic events planned are the Buddhist International Travel Mart (BITM), Himalayan Travel Mart (HTM), Adventure Travel Mart, and Safari Tourism Mart. These signature events will spotlight Nepal’s wide-ranging tourism potential and invite global collaboration in adventure, spiritual, and eco-tourism sectors.
Driving Sustainability and Competitiveness in Tourism
NTB officials assert that this year’s budget reflects a determined effort to enhance Nepal’s global competitiveness, diversify its tourism offerings, and promote sustainable and inclusive travel. The board aims to build a resilient tourism ecosystem that supports both local communities and international travelers.
By aligning investment with strategic priorities, NTB is positioning Nepal not just as a destination, but as a dynamic, welcoming, and world-class tourism hub ready to thrive in the post-pandemic landscape.
