Nepal Tourism Board and UNDP Launch Advanced Mountain Guide Training at Api Himal

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under their Sustainable Tourism Program, has signed a significant agreement with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and Api Himal Rural Municipality to conduct an advanced “Summer Skills for Professional Mountain Guide Course” at Api Himal in the far-western region of Nepal. This collaborative initiative aims to enhance the skills of mountain guides and promote sustainable tourism by tapping into the untapped mountaineering potential of the Api Himal region and other peaks in Sudurpashchim province.

Comprehensive Mountain Guide Curriculum Developed

The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), in collaboration with the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), has developed an extensive 1,696-hour curriculum dedicated to training professional mountain guides. This curriculum is designed to prepare guides for climbing 476 officially recognized peaks in Nepal, ranging in height from 5,800 meters to the world’s highest, Mount Everest at 8,848.86 meters. The program not only focuses on well-known peaks but also equips guides with the skills to explore and promote new, less frequented summits, opening fresh avenues for mountaineering tourism in the country.

NMA President Nima Nuru Sherpa highlighted that this course will serve to develop highly skilled mountain guides who can effectively contribute to sustainable tourism and adventure sports by promoting both existing and new mountain destinations.

Promoting Api Himal and Tourism in Sudurpashchim Province

The summer skills training is strategically located at Api Himal, aiming to highlight and boost tourism in this remote region of Nepal. According to Sherpa, the course is expected to play a pivotal role in introducing climbers and trekkers to the vast potential of Api Himal and other surrounding peaks in Sudurpashchim province, a region that has immense but relatively underutilized natural beauty and mountaineering opportunities.

Rajendra Bahadur Lama, NMA’s Training Committee Coordinator and Secretariat Member, explained that this training program is part of the broader mountain guide training initiative by the NMA. To be eligible for this specialized summer skills course, applicants must have previously completed the foundational “Fundamentals for Mountaineering” training, ensuring that trainees have a solid base of knowledge before advancing.

Application Process and Training Details

Applications for this exclusive 35-day mountain guide training opened on Wednesday, with the deadline set for August 12, 2025. The training will be split between theoretical classroom sessions in Kathmandu and hands-on practical training at Api Himal. The theoretical part of the curriculum covers a wide range of essential subjects including mountain weather patterns, climbing equipment handling, environmental conservation, Himalayan geology, regional climate, and local flora, fauna, and heritage. This holistic approach ensures that guides are well-versed in both the technical and environmental aspects of mountaineering.

The practical training at Api Himal will focus on critical mountaineering skills such as map reading and mountain navigation, lead rock climbing, anchoring techniques, camping, glacier walking, glacier rescue methods, rope fixing, peak climbing, basic canyoning, and summer safety measures. These sessions will take place on the challenging and pristine glaciers of Api Himal, providing real-world experience in alpine conditions.

Unique Opportunity to Climb a Previously Unclimbed Peak

An exciting highlight of the program is the opportunity for trainees to climb Lhayul Peak, which stands at 6,395 meters. This peak remains unclimbed and presents a rare chance for aspiring mountain guides to test their skills on virgin terrain. Successfully summiting Lhayul Peak will be a remarkable achievement for participants and a testament to the high standard of training provided.

Impact on Mountain Tourism and Local Communities

This collaborative training program between NTB, UNDP, NMA, and Api Himal Rural Municipality is expected to have a far-reaching impact on mountain tourism in Nepal. By developing a cadre of highly skilled, knowledgeable, and environmentally conscious mountain guides, the initiative supports the sustainable growth of tourism in Nepal’s far-western region, which has traditionally been less accessible to tourists.

The program also contributes to local community development by creating employment opportunities and encouraging eco-friendly tourism practices that help preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the region. The involvement of local government through Api Himal Rural Municipality ensures that the benefits of increased tourism will be shared locally, supporting infrastructure development and community welfare.

A Step Towards Sustainable and Professional Mountaineering

The launch of the “Summer Skills for Professional Mountain Guide Course” underscores Nepal’s commitment to professionalizing its mountain guiding services while promoting sustainable tourism practices. With Nepal being a premier destination for mountaineers worldwide, initiatives like this are crucial in maintaining high safety standards, preserving fragile mountain ecosystems, and offering authentic experiences to adventurers.

The course is a clear indication of how cooperation between government bodies, international organizations, and local institutions can foster tourism growth while prioritizing environmental and community well-being. As Nepal continues to position itself as a global leader in adventure tourism, such training programs will be instrumental in shaping the future of mountaineering in the country.
