Radisson Blu Hotel, Sheffield, has achieved Verified Net Zero status, becoming the second property in the United Kingdom within Radisson Hotel Group’s portfolio to receive the recognition. The achievement marks another step towards the Group’s ambitious target of establishing 100 Verified Net Zero hotels by 2030, strengthening its commitment to sustainable hospitality and environmentally responsible tourism.
The Sheffield property joins Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, which was the Group’s first hotel in the UK and globally to achieve Verified Net Zero status. With this latest addition, the Group now has 11 Verified Net Zero hotels across its international portfolio, demonstrating its continued efforts to reduce the environmental impact of hotel operations while maintaining high standards of guest experience.

Sheffield Hotel Strengthens Sustainable Tourism Commitment
Located in the heart of Sheffield city centre, Radisson Blu Hotel, Sheffield, features 154 guest rooms, a rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking the Town Hall and Peace Gardens, and six flexible meeting and event spaces with an outdoor terrace. The property combines contemporary hospitality facilities with the architectural character of a historic Victorian building.
The hotel underwent restoration with the support of heritage specialists, preserving an important landmark in Sheffield’s urban landscape. The city is widely recognized for its green spaces and extensive tree coverage, while its local government has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. These environmental ambitions make the property a significant addition to Sheffield’s sustainable tourism and hospitality development.

Verified Net Zero Framework Covers Hotel Operations
The Verified Net Zero program addresses emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. This includes direct emissions, energy related indirect emissions, and the wider operational and supply chain footprint associated with hotel activities. The framework aims to reduce emissions throughout the entire guest experience rather than focusing exclusively on electricity consumption.
A key requirement involves using 100% renewable energy for hotel operations, including heating, cooling, hot water and cooking. The programme also focuses on reducing waste, improving resource efficiency and reviewing supply chains to minimize emissions from food, laundry, hotel amenities and other operational activities. These measures encourage hotels to adopt more sustainable practices throughout their daily operations.

Low Carbon Menus and Sustainable Partnerships
Radisson Hotel Group has partnered with Agreena to compensate for remaining emissions through nature-based carbon credits and soil carbon removal initiatives. The partnership supports more than 2,300 farmers working to regenerate over 4.5 million hectares of agricultural land across Europe. This approach connects the hospitality sector with broader agricultural sustainability and environmental restoration efforts.
The Group has also partnered with Swedish sustainability specialist Klimato to develop lower-carbon food menus for in-room dining, meetings and events, and breakfast services. Menus feature carbon labels ranging from A, representing the lowest emissions, to E, representing the highest. By prioritizing fresh, seasonal ingredients and adjusting recipes, the initiative aims to reduce the carbon footprint of food offerings by up to 40% without compromising taste.

Independent Verification and Global Expansion Target
Each hotel participating in the Verified Net Zero programme undergoes independent third-party verification by TÜV Rheinland, ensuring compliance with an internationally recognized Net Zero Methodology for Hotels. This verification provides an established framework for assessing environmental performance and maintaining accountability across participating properties.
According to Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability and Security Officer at Radisson Hotel Group, the expansion of the programme reflects increasing guest awareness and demand for sustainable travel, meetings and events. Valerie Donaldson, General Manager of Radisson Blu Hotel, Sheffield, also highlighted the city’s sustainability ambitions and the hotel’s role in supporting its development. The Group aims to continue expanding its network of verified properties while demonstrating that environmental responsibility and quality hospitality can progress together.
