Rudrapur Gadhi in Nawalparasi Emerging as a Popular Trekking Destination

Rudrapur Gadhi, a historical site located in the Hupsekot rural municipality-5 of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), is developing into a new destination for trekking enthusiasts. Situated in the Dhowadi area, the site has been drawing increasing numbers of visitors, particularly those seeking shorter trekking experiences.

According to Padma Bahadur Rana, the chairperson of Hupsekot rural municipality-5, the number of visitors to Rudrapur Gadhi has been rising daily. “Rudrapur Gadhi is now a popular choice for those looking for a short trek,” said Rana. Positioned at an altitude of 1,936 meters, Rudrapur Gadhi has become a preferred alternative for many who cannot make the longer journey to the higher peaks of Devchuli, the tallest hill in the district.

While the trek to Devchuli is considered longer, Rudrapur Gadhi offers a more accessible option, attracting those interested in shorter hikes. Located about an hour’s walk from the Hura Hura area in Dhowadi, the trek provides spectacular views of the district’s picturesque hills, the Himalayan range to the north, and the settlements to the south. Visitors can also explore the historical site of Rudrapur Gadhi at the summit, making it an appealing choice for trekkers.

“Those who venture to Rudrapur can enjoy scenic vistas as well as visit the historical site,” said Rana. The site holds significant historical value, as it is the fort of King Rudra Sen of the Sen dynasty. The fort, situated at an elevation of 1,800 meters above sea level, was built in the 16th century during King Rudra Sen’s reign, when he established Palpa as the center of his kingdom.

Despite its historical importance, the fort is currently in a dilapidated state, with its structures being overtaken by shrubbery due to a lack of proper preservation. The ruins of the palace, among other structures, have suffered from neglect.

To improve accessibility, a downhill path has been constructed, and Hupsekot rural municipality has built resting spots along the trek. However, the path is still not fully developed. Visitors suggest that additional resting spots, better management of water resources, and the preservation of the fort, along with historical displays at the site, would enhance the area’s appeal.

Birendra Parajuli, a trekker from Kawasoti, shared his thoughts: “Rudrapur Gadhi is beautiful, but better management is needed. Providing historical information and maintaining cleanliness could significantly improve the experience for visitors.”

With further development and preservation efforts, Rudrapur Gadhi has the potential to become a significant trekking destination, attracting more tourists and offering an opportunity to explore both natural beauty and historical significance.
