South Korean Tourist Dies of Altitude Sickness While Returning from Tilicho Lake

A South Korean tourist lost his life due to altitude sickness while returning from Tilicho Lake, one of Nepal’s highest-altitude lakes and a popular trekking destination.

The incident occurred at Thoro Khola, located in ward no. 9 of Nesyang Rural Municipality, Manang district. According to Assistant Chief District Officer Yubaraj Aryal, the deceased has been identified as Myeongok Jong, a tourist from South Korea.

Aryal informed that police have been mobilized to manage the body. “Once the body is brought to the district headquarters, a decision will be made whether to conduct the post-mortem in Chame or send it to Kathmandu,” he added.

Tilicho Lake, situated at an altitude of around 4,919 meters, attracts many international and domestic trekkers each year. However, the high elevation poses serious risks such as altitude sickness, especially for those not properly acclimatized.

Authorities have urged trekkers to take necessary precautions while trekking in high-altitude areas and to ensure proper acclimatization to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
