Sudurpaschim’s Bold Move to Boost Tourism with Badimalika–Khaptad Route, Backed by ADB

Government badimalika

The Sudurpaschim Provincial Government has announced plans to construct a trekking route connecting the renowned religious and tourist destination Badimalika to Khaptad, with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

According to Bharat Prasad Shrestha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest, and Environment, the project aims to enhance accessibility and promote tourism in the region. Shrestha confirmed that the provincial government has reached an agreement with ADB to proceed with the project, which is part of the province’s broader tourism infrastructure development initiative.

Budget Allocation and Project Scope

The trekking route will be built with ADB’s NPR 220 million support. For the current fiscal year alone, NPR 70 million has been allocated for its construction. Last year, the province invested NPR 12.5 million in the same area to build trekking paths and rest houses. “The Badimalika-Khaptad trekking route will be a major attraction for tourists and devotees,” Shrestha stated, highlighting the provincial government’s continued focus on religious tourism development.

Support for Local Tourism Stakeholders

To further promote tourism, the provincial government has introduced training programs for hotel entrepreneurs, homestay operators, and tourist guides. Help desks have been established at Gadda Chauki and Gauriphanta border points in Kanchanpur to assist visitors.

“The government is prioritizing the development of tourist destinations across the province,” Shrestha said. “This year, NPR 7 million has been allocated for upgrading the Tikapur Airport, while 25% of the provincial investment is being directed toward the construction of Majhgaun Airport, considering its proximity to Shuklaphanta National Park.”

Nature-Based Tourism Focus

Shrestha emphasized that the province is committed to promoting nature-based tourism. Badimalika, located in Bajura and often referred to as a ‘heaven on earth,’ has been attracting a growing number of tourists and pilgrims. The trekking route linking Badimalika with Khaptad is expected to further boost the destination’s appeal. With this initiative, the provincial government aims to position Sudurpaschim as a premier hub for cultural, religious, and nature-based tourism in Nepal.
