Kaski’s Annapurna Rural Municipality-7, Landruk, is set to host its annual Honey Hunting Festival from Mangsir 22 to 24, with the municipality as the primary promoter. The festival celebrates the traditional practice of honey harvesting from cliffs while promoting it as a unique cultural and tourism event.
According to the festival committee chairperson, Suresh Gurung, honey has been traditionally extracted from the Mahbheer (Honey Cliff) for over a century. In recent years, the practice has gained attention as a significant tourist attraction, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
The honeycombs are located on the cliffs near Kotesang, along the Modi River. Honey hunters, known for their daring skills, extract the natural honey in a highly perilous process. This honey is not only prized for its health benefits but also supports the local economy. “We aim to promote internal and external tourism by showcasing the historical and cultural significance of honey hunting. Visitors will get to witness the process of honey extraction, its display, and even purchase it,” said Gurung.
The Kotesang Cliff houses approximately 60 honeycombs, with the honey fetching around NPR 3,000 per liter. The revenue generated significantly contributes to the livelihoods of locals. Foreign tourists, in particular, find the honey-hunting experience fascinating, often extending their stay to enjoy the unique tradition.
Landruk serves as a gateway to Mardi Himal Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp and offers access to destinations such as Poon Hill. The festival is expected to boost tourism, preserve local art and culture, and enhance economic opportunities in the region. “The event aligns with our vision of conserving cultural heritage while fostering tourism growth,” said Bharatman Gurung, the ward chairperson.
Volleyball Tournament to Add Excitement
The festival will also feature a ward-level men’s volleyball tournament, offering cash prizes of NPR 70,000, 40,000, and 20,000 for the first, second, and third places, respectively. According to the tournament coordinator, Mahadev Gurung, the sports event aims to add a lively spirit to the festival while attracting more visitors.
This cultural and adventurous festival is poised to be a remarkable event, blending tradition with tourism in the scenic village of Landruk.
