Tilaurakot’s Historic Significance Highlighted with New Stamp

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has welcomed the release of a new postage stamp featuring a punch-marked coin from Tilaurakot, an ancient city significant for its historical and archaeological value. This initiative highlights the site’s importance in NTB’s ongoing efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for Tilaurakot.

As the ancient capital of the Shakya dynasty and the early home of Siddhartha Gautam, who later became Buddha, Tilaurakot possesses immense tourism potential. The stamp, representing an artifact from around 2,800 years ago, underscores the region’s rich cultural heritage and aligns with NTB’s commitment to heritage tourism, a key aspect of its sustainable tourism strategy.

NTB CEO Deepak Raj Joshi emphasized the importance of preserving historical sites, stating, “Tilaurakot is not just a historical landmark but a living testament to Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage. The issuance of this postage stamp enhances global recognition of Tilaurakot and reinforces our dedication to achieving UNESCO World Heritage status for the site. We are committed to promoting Tilaurakot as a must-visit destination for travelers, historians, and spiritual seekers alike.”

Recognizing the critical role of historical sites in attracting both domestic and international tourists, NTB collaborates with the Lumbini Development Trust and other stakeholders to enhance the visibility of Buddhist heritage sites. Efforts include improving infrastructure, offering guided heritage tours, and launching digital campaigns to showcase it’s significance to a global audience.

NTB encourages visitors to explore and experience its timeless legacy. As Nepal advances in its UNESCO recognition efforts, NTB remains dedicated to heritage conservation and sustainable tourism, ensuring local communities benefit while preserving the country’s invaluable historical treasures.
