Timbung Pokhari: A Hidden Gem In Taplejung

Timbung Pokhari: When talking about ponds and lakes in Nepal, large, deep, and high-altitude water bodies come to mind. While some are well-known tourist attractions, many remain unexplored. One such hidden gem is Timbung Pokhari, located in Kalikhola, Sidingwa Rural Municipality, Taplejung.

Accessible via a seven-hour drive from Phungling, followed by a day-long trek, this breathtaking lake is gaining popularity among tourists. Rich in natural beauty, religious significance, and historical value, it was traditionally called “Timmak Barak” by the Limbu community, meaning “Gun Lake.” According to legend, the lake produced sounds resembling gunfire, leading to its unique name.

Timbung Pokhari, situated at 4,350 meters, is considered spiritually sacred. It is believed that wishes made here come true, as ancient myths suggest deities once resided in the area seeking a pure environment. The lake’s crystal-clear blue waters, fresh mountain air, and aromatic herbs create a heavenly ambiance.

Recognizing its potential, the Nepalese government included Timbung Pokhari among 100 new tourist destinations in 2018. Despite a rise in visitors, the site still lacks proper investment and promotion. Tourists who visit describe it as a mesmerizing experience, with many stating that the effort to reach it is rewarded by nature’s pure embrace.

Local authorities and conservation committees are working to improve infrastructure, including trails from both Panchthar and Taplejung, stone pathways, and stairways around the lake. With better promotion and facilities, Timbung Pokhari has the potential to become a major tourism hub, contributing to local income and Nepal’s tourism industry.
