Tourism, agriculture, and medicinal herbs have been identified as key sectors for boosting the economy of the Karnali region, according to a recent study presented during a stakeholder discussion organized by International IDEA Nepal on Monday.

The study, focusing on economic growth and development potential in Karnali Province, was discussed among various stakeholders, including development partners, industrialists, civil society members, and government officials.

Khagendra Chamling Rai, Province Programme Officer for International IDEA Nepal, emphasized that the report was prepared using data from periodic plans, economic surveys, interviews with key individuals, and field inspections. “The collaborative discussion aimed to identify challenges and propose actionable solutions with the involvement of all stakeholders,” he stated.

Pramod Bhagat, another Programme Officer at IDEA Nepal, presented the provincial government’s vision of creating an “Organic Karnali,” promoting the Golden Triangle Route for tourism, sustainable agricultural practices, and necessary infrastructure development in lower Karnali.

Project Manager Prakash Jha underscored the importance of improving the supply chain and marketing of local products to enhance citizens’ incomes. He stressed that efficient marketing strategies could significantly elevate the region’s economic prospects.

Additionally, Mahendra Jung Shahi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Planning highlighted the critical role of forest resources, reliable road networks, and integrated human settlements in driving Karnali’s development.

Kadga BK, Chairman of Chaukune Rural Municipality and Province Member of the National Rural Municipalities Federation called for the recognition of diverse professions to strengthen economic links.

The discussion also prioritized infrastructure development, documentation, grading and packaging of indigenous crops, marketing of agro-products, promotion of micro-enterprises, and investments in agriculture, medicinal herbs, and tourism.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that a collaborative approach and targeted strategies could unlock Karnali Province’s economic potential and ensure sustainable development for the region.
