Tourist Arrivals in Bandipur Decline Sharply After Recent Protests

Tanahun

In previous years, Bandipur thrived during the Dashain festival. The hilltop heritage town in Tanahun welcomed over 1,000 tourists daily, filling hotels and homestays to near 100% occupancy. Even until mid-Bhadra, before the protests erupted, the tourism sector was flourishing with consistent arrivals.

However, following the protests that took place on Bhadra 23 and 24, the scenario has drastically changed. The once-crowded lanes, vibrant restaurants, and lively guesthouses are now facing cancellations and declining bookings. Tourism entrepreneurs who had been expecting a prosperous festive season are now facing deep uncertainty.

Bandipur Visit Year 2025 Hit Hard

The year 2025 was officially declared as Bandipur Visit Year with the aim of doubling the number of visitors and promoting Bandipur globally as a premier heritage and nature destination. The campaign was backed by Bandipur Rural Municipality, which also held grand promotional events in Kathmandu to showcase the town’s beauty, cultural charm, and hospitality.

But the unexpected drop in tourist arrivals after the protests has dealt a severe blow to these ambitions. According to Visit Year Secretariat Coordinator and tourism entrepreneur Baish Bahadur Gurung, the festival season, particularly Dashain and Tihar, has always been a golden time for Bandipur tourism. This year, however, bookings are being canceled, and the flow of visitors has not recovered.

“After the Gen-Z demonstrations, the environment has changed. We feel like tourism, which had been gradually reviving after the pandemic, has once again been hit hard,” Gurung remarked with concern.

Safety Concerns and Perceptions

One of the major challenges now is reassuring visitors about Bandipur’s safety. Bandipur Rural Municipality Chairperson Surendra Thapa emphasized that despite the political climate and demonstrations across the country, Bandipur remains a safe and welcoming destination. He stated, “Even though difficult situations have arisen in the country, Bandipur is safe, and we are ready to welcome tourists. Our focus will be on spreading this message widely.”

According to Thapa, the number of visitors has plunged dramatically. Where once more than 1,000 tourists used to arrive daily, the figure has dropped to barely 100 in recent weeks. He believes the protests are a major factor, compounded by the poor road conditions leading to the town. To counter this negative trend, the municipality has planned to host a special welcome event on World Tourism Day to encourage arrivals and restore confidence.

Past Success and Current Targets

In 2081 BS, Bandipur recorded around 200,000 visitors, including 60,000 international tourists and 150,000 domestic travelers. Building on this momentum, authorities had set a target of doubling tourist numbers in 2025.

Bandipur has traditionally been a favorite among travelers from Japan, China, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, France, the US, Germany, Denmark, Pakistan, Australia, the UK, Ireland, South Korea, Belgium, Thailand, Taiwan, Switzerland, Malaysia, Portugal, Czech Republic, Iran, India, Greece, and Argentina. The diversity of visitors reflects Bandipur’s global appeal as both a cultural and natural heritage destination.

Attractions That Draw Tourists

Bandipur offers a unique blend of cultural, religious, and natural attractions. The municipality has listed several key destinations including Khadgadevi Temple, Thanimai Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, Siddha Cave, the Mani Mukundsen trekking route (popularly called the Mini Great Wall), Tindhara, waterfalls and fountains, Tundikhel, the historic palace of King Mani Mukund Sen, and the Padma Library.

In addition, traditional Bhaktapur-style houses, scenic viewpoints like Tundikhel, natural spots such as Raniban and Ramkot, and cultural landmarks like the Bindhyabasini and Mahalaxmi temples continue to enchant visitors. These sites not only highlight Bandipur’s rich heritage but also provide a serene escape from urban life.

The Road Ahead for Bandipur Tourism

The sudden decline in tourist arrivals has created both a challenge and an opportunity. On one hand, entrepreneurs are worried about revenue losses and loan repayments, especially after investing heavily in hotel and homestay upgrades. On the other hand, the situation has highlighted the need for better crisis management, infrastructure development, and communication strategies.

Local leaders and stakeholders are now focusing on three priorities:

  1. Rebuilding Trust: Spreading the message that Bandipur is safe and peaceful for both domestic and international tourists.
  2. Improving Access: Pressuring concerned authorities to repair road networks to ensure hassle-free travel.
  3. Sustaining Promotion: Continuing with Visit Year 2025 campaigns to retain momentum and attract visitors despite current setbacks.

Bandipur’s tourism industry, which had been showing signs of strong recovery after the pandemic, is once again facing turbulence. Entrepreneurs and local leaders remain hopeful that the situation will improve, especially with focused promotional activities and reassurance of safety. With its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural charm, and heritage, Bandipur still holds immense potential to regain its position as one of Nepal’s most beloved tourist towns. The challenge now is ensuring that the dreams of Bandipur Visit Year 2025 are not derailed by temporary setbacks but instead become a stepping stone toward a more resilient and sustainable tourism future.
