The spring season of Trekking Guide Training and Trekking Porter Guide Training has officially commenced at the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) in Rabibhawan, Kathmandu. The programme began on May 4, 2026, marking the start of another round of professional capacity-building for Nepal’s mountain tourism workforce.
The training is being conducted under the coordination of the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) in collaboration with Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management, a key national institution responsible for tourism and hospitality education in Nepal.

148 Trekking Guide Trainees and 31 Porter Guides Participating
According to TAAN, a total of 148 trainees are participating in the Trekking Guide Training programme, including 38 female participants, reflecting growing female involvement in Nepal’s adventure tourism sector. In addition, 31 participants are enrolled in the Trekking Porter Guide Training programme.

The Trekking Guide Training will run for 35 days, while the Trekking Porter Guide Training will be conducted over 15 days, both designed as structured professional courses aimed at strengthening the skills and knowledge required in the mountain tourism industry.

Additionally, the same training programme will also be conducted by TAAN Gandaki towards the end of Jestha, to produce well-trained and competent trekking guides. The upcoming session is expected to further strengthen the supply of skilled human resources in the trekking and mountaineering sector, ensuring better service quality and professionalism in Nepal’s adventure tourism industry.

Licensing Opportunity After Successful Completion
Upon successful completion of the training programmes, participants will be eligible to obtain official Trekking Guide Licenses and Trekking Porter Guide Licenses. These certifications are essential for working legally and professionally within Nepal’s trekking and mountaineering tourism sector. Officials stated that the training is designed not only to provide technical skills but also to enhance safety awareness, customer service quality, and environmental responsibility among trekking professionals.

Orientation Ceremony Highlights Training Objectives
An orientation programme was held at NATHM during the launch event, where officials from both Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal and NATHM welcomed the participants and extended their best wishes for the training period.

During the session, trainers and officials briefed the participants on the objectives of the programme, course structure, teaching methodologies, and expectations from trekking guides in Nepal’s rapidly growing mountain tourism industry. They also emphasized professionalism, discipline, and safety standards as key elements for future trekking service providers.

Focus on Professionalism in Mountain Tourism Sector
Speakers highlighted that Nepal’s trekking sector demands highly skilled and responsible leaders who can ensure both tourist safety and quality service delivery in challenging Himalayan environments. They encouraged participants to take full advantage of the training opportunity, noting that Nepal’s reputation as a global trekking destination depends heavily on the competence of its leaders and porters.
Strengthening Human Resources for Tourism Growth
The training programme is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen human resources in Nepal’s tourism industry, particularly in the adventure and trekking sectors. With increasing tourist arrivals and expanding trekking routes, the demand for trained professionals continues to grow. Officials expressed confidence that the newly trained leaders and porters will contribute significantly to improving service quality and supporting sustainable tourism development in the Himalayan region.
