The weather and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has forecasted that most parts of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, along with some western regions of Gandaki Province, will come under the influence of western winds today. Meanwhile, the remaining areas of the country are expected to experience the impact of weak monsoon systems and local wind patterns.
According to the department, the combination of these weather systems is expected to bring variations in cloud cover and rainfall activity across different parts of the country. The shift in atmospheric conditions marks a gradual transition period as the monsoon continues to weaken over Nepal.

Afternoon Weather Outlook
During the afternoon hours, hilly regions in Koshi, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to witness generally cloudy conditions. This means that mountainous areas could experience reduced sunshine and increased humidity throughout the day. In contrast, the Terai belt, which stretches across the southern plains, will see partly cloudy skies, allowing for intermittent sunshine and dry conditions in most areas.
Meteorologists have also indicated a possibility of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in some parts of Koshi, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Such weather events are common during the seasonal transition, as residual monsoon moisture interacts with westerly systems. The rainfall is expected to be localized, with some areas receiving brief but intense downpours, particularly over the hilly and mountainous terrains.
Evening and Night Forecast
As the evening approaches, the weather pattern is forecasted to change slightly. The DHM report suggests that tonight, the hilly regions, including Koshi and Madhes provinces, will experience partly cloudy conditions, while most other regions will remain mainly clear. This will allow for cooler nighttime temperatures, especially in the mountainous districts.
A few isolated places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces may see light rainfall, but it is not expected to cause significant disruption. The Terai region, however, will likely remain dry, offering favorable conditions for outdoor activities and travel.
Transition Period and Seasonal Shift
The DHM noted that the country is currently going through a transitional phase, with the monsoon gradually weakening and western disturbances beginning to play a more dominant role in shaping local weather. This shift is typical during early October, as the monsoon begins its withdrawal from Nepal.
Experts have said that during this period, variations in temperature, humidity, and wind flow are common. While daytime temperatures in the Terai may remain warm, higher altitudes are expected to experience cooler mornings and nights. This mixed pattern often leads to unpredictable rainfall activity in certain pockets, particularly in the mid-hill and mountain regions.
Advisory for the Public
The Department has advised residents, especially those living in hilly and mountainous areas, to remain cautious due to the possibility of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Travelers are also encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather bulletins, as sudden weather changes could affect road and air transport operations in some highland areas.

Farmers in rain-fed agricultural zones have been advised to take advantage of any rainfall for post-harvest soil moisture, but also to protect stored grains and newly harvested crops from unexpected showers. Western Nepal, particularly Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, will remain under the influence of western winds today, while the rest of the country will experience mild monsoon and local wind effects. Cloudy skies, scattered rainfall, and occasional thunder are expected in hilly areas, whereas the plains will mostly enjoy clearer conditions.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology continues to monitor evolving weather systems closely and will issue further updates as necessary. As Nepal transitions from the monsoon to the post-monsoon season, residents are advised to stay alert and prepared for localized weather variations across the country.
