To preserve, promote, and internationally showcase the originality, diversity, and cultural identity of Nepali cuisine, the “Second National Culinary Challenge Competition 2026” is set to be organized jointly by the International Nepali Chef Society and Nepali Chef Society.
The two-day culinary event will take place on May 15 and 16 at Pathibhara Culinary Art College. Organizers say the competition aims to strengthen professionalism, innovation, and international competitiveness in Nepali culinary arts while promoting the country’s rich food heritage. The programme is expected to bring together chefs, culinary students, hospitality professionals, and food enthusiasts from across Nepal and abroad, creating a major platform for culinary exchange and tourism promotion.

Focus on Indigenous and Traditional Nepali Cuisine
According to the organizers, special emphasis will be placed on the exploration, research, preservation, and promotion of authentic indigenous dishes from all seven provinces of Nepal. Traditional and endangered local delicacies from different geographical and ethnic communities will be showcased during the event. Organizers believe the programme will help revive disappearing culinary traditions while introducing them to younger generations and international audiences.
The event also seeks to establish a balance between modern culinary techniques and traditional flavours, encouraging young chefs to develop creativity and innovation without losing the authenticity of Nepali cuisine. Organizers stated that Nepal’s food culture reflects the country’s diverse geography, ethnic identity, and centuries-old traditions, making cookery tourism an important component of Nepal’s broader tourism industry.

Industry Perspective and Leadership Insight
Senior Manager Surya Thapaliya highlighted the broader importance of the initiative, emphasizing both global and local dimensions of the culinary profession. He stated, “Chefs are global manpower. I will also support collaboration at the local level. Many public institutions are still not fully public-friendly. Taking culinary events outside the capital requires great courage. They are true brand ambassadors of Nepali food culture.”
His remarks underline the importance of decentralizing culinary development beyond Kathmandu and strengthening cooperation between institutions, chefs, and local stakeholders to promote Nepali cuisine globally.
Open Culinary Competitions and Food Festival Planned
The event will feature open cookery competitions, various food contests, and a large-scale food festival showcasing a wide variety of dishes. More than 50 food stalls will be set up during the festival, offering visitors an opportunity to taste dishes ranging from traditional Nepali recipes to international cuisine. Local food entrepreneurs, chefs, restaurants, and culinary institutions are also expected to participate actively in the exhibition.

The food festival is anticipated to attract large numbers of visitors, creating a festive atmosphere while promoting local agricultural products, indigenous ingredients, and food-based entrepreneurship. Organizers believe the event can significantly contribute to the promotion of culinary tourism by highlighting Nepal’s unique gastronomic identity.
International Judges to Participate
One of the major highlights of the competition will be the participation of experienced international chefs from more than 10 countries as judges. The involvement of international culinary experts is expected to provide Nepali chefs with opportunities for world-class evaluation, professional guidance, and experience-sharing.
Organizers say such interactions will help local culinary professionals better understand global hospitality trends, international presentation standards, and modern cooking techniques. The event is also expected to strengthen Nepal’s cookery connections with international hospitality networks and promote Nepali cuisine on a broader global platform.

Teams Required to Compete in Groups
Participation in the competition has been made mandatory in teams of three members. Interested participants must confirm their entry by depositing the registration fee into the official account of the organizing society. The team-based format aims to encourage collaboration, coordination, and creative menu planning among participants.
According to organizers, the competition will test not only cooking skills but also presentation, teamwork, hygiene, innovation, and the ability to incorporate authentic Nepali ingredients into modern culinary practices.

Cash Prizes and Recognition for Participants
The organizers have announced attractive cash prizes for the winning teams. The first-place team will receive a cash prize of Rs 100,000, while the second and third-place winners will receive Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively. In addition to the cash awards, all participating contestants will be provided with medals and certificates in recognition of their efforts and participation.
Each participating team will also receive a “Mystery Box,” a common feature in professional culinary competitions where chefs are required to prepare dishes using surprise ingredients within a limited time. Organizers say the inclusion of mystery box challenges will encourage creativity, quick thinking, and innovation among participants.

Boost Expected for Tourism and Local Economy
Beyond culinary development, organizers believe the event will contribute significantly to tourism promotion, marketing of local products, employment generation, and cultural preservation. By bringing together chefs, hospitality businesses, tourism stakeholders, and food enthusiasts, the programme is expected to create economic opportunities for local producers and entrepreneurs connected to Nepal’s food and hospitality industries.
The event is also expected to strengthen culinary tourism, which has increasingly become an important aspect of global travel experiences. Tourism experts note that food culture plays a vital role in attracting visitors, and Nepal’s diverse ethnic cuisines hold strong potential to become a unique international tourism product.
