Actor and Director Neer Shah Highlights Cultural Impact on Nepali Cinema

The prominent actor and director Neer Shah has emphasized the cultural limitations of Nepali filmmakers, stating that this has adversely affected the quality of Nepali cinema. He spoke during the ongoing ‘Maithili International Film Festival’ in Janakpurdham, Shah highlighted the unifying power of Nepal’s diverse culture.

“Our country’s rich cultural diversity has the power to bind us together in unity,” Shah remarked. On a different note, he mentioned that although he can understand and read Maithili, he finds it challenging to communicate in the language on public platforms. “Maithili is a highly respected language in the history of world cultures,” he added.

Shah also touched upon the current trends in filmmaking, noting that while foreign filmmakers do not face investment shortages and often work with large budgets, they sometimes lack compelling subject matter. “Nowadays, foreign filmmakers are coming here in search of new stories. Therefore, we must not delay in presenting our narratives through our language and style in films. The support and participation of relevant authorities are also necessary,” Shah stated.

The festival, organized by the Lok Sanchar organization, features seven films, short films, and documentaries in the Maithili language, including entries from both domestic and international filmmakers, according to the festival director, Ramesh Ranjan Jha.
