Safety Concerns Halt Helicopter Operations at Nalinchowk Heliport

Helicopter pilots have raised concerns about the newly constructed heliport in Nalinchowk, Bhaktapur, citing safety issues that have prevented them from conducting flights since its opening on Ashadh 7. The Nepal Civil Aviation Authority (CAAN) has acknowledged receiving feedback and suggestions over the past nine days, prompting immediate actions to rectify the situation.

“While CAAN acknowledges the received feedback and suggestions regarding the operational issues of the new helipad, safety remains a top priority,” said spokesperson Hansraj Pandey. He emphasized the necessity for thorough coordination among residents, authorities, and the government to address these concerns and implement necessary improvements.

Pandey elaborated, stating, “The construction of a helipad requires comprehensive planning and rigorous security assessments. Given the associated risks, it is crucial to meticulously plan and execute measures based on recommendations.”

The heliport, covering an area of 32 ropanis, underwent test flights by Mountain Air helicopters on Mangsir 26 last year, with costs totaling approximately NPR 11.9 million during the fiscal year 2079-80. Situated near Tribhuvan International Airport and Buddha Air’s hangar, the helipad faces challenges during takeoff and landing due to its proximity to large residential buildings, as reported by a captain who encountered technical issues during operations. CAAN continues its efforts to evaluate and address these concerns, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of helicopters from the heliport.
