With the tourist season fast approaching, tourism entrepreneurs in Sauraha, the gateway to the famous Chitwan National Park, have begun their preparations in full swing. Hotels, restaurants, and safari operators are working to ensure facilities are ready for both domestic and international visitors. Staff members who had taken seasonal leave are now returning to work, signaling the start of an active period for the local tourism industry.
Optimism Among Hoteliers
Last year’s tourist arrival numbers left many in the industry disheartened, but this year, the outlook is far more optimistic. Ramesh Silwal, operator of Hotel Vista in Sauraha, expressed confidence that tourist arrivals will surpass last year’s figures. “We are hopeful that this season will bring better business and more guests,” he said, highlighting that early inquiries from tour operators and travel agencies have been encouraging.
Focus on Maintenance and Upgrades
Suman Ghimire, proprietor of Jungle Safari Lodge and former president of the Regional Hotel Association, is busy with cleaning, painting, and maintenance work at his property. According to him, hoteliers across Sauraha are actively engaged in sprucing up their premises to create a welcoming environment for guests. “The preparations are not just cosmetic, many are also investing in infrastructure upgrades to improve the overall guest experience,” Ghimire noted.
Restaurants Ready to Welcome Guests
Deependra Khatri, former president of the Restaurant and Bar Association, shared that there are around 80 restaurants in Sauraha, all eagerly waiting for the arrival of tourists. “This year, we expect more visitors compared to last year. Everyone is gearing up with special menus, upgraded interiors, and better service to meet the expectations of both domestic and international travelers,” he explained.
Sauraha’s Hospitality Capacity
Sauraha boasts over 120 hotels, collectively offering nearly 8,000 rooms. This large hospitality capacity positions it as one of Nepal’s most important tourist hubs. Many establishments cater to a wide range of budgets, from luxury lodges to affordable guesthouses, ensuring that visitors from all walks of life can enjoy their stay.
Slow Start but Rising Expectations
At present, Sauraha is experiencing only a trickle of tourists. However, Om Pandey, the current president of the Regional Hotel Association, believes this will change in the coming weeks. “We are confident that the number of visitors will rise significantly in the next month,” he said. According to Pandey, the seasonal influx typically begins in October, with numbers peaking during the cooler months when wildlife sightings in Chitwan National Park are most favorable.
Gateway to Chitwan National Park
Sauraha’s strategic location at the entrance to Chitwan National Park, renowned for its jungle safaris, diverse wildlife, and cultural attractions, makes it a must-visit destination for travelers. The park is home to endangered species such as the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, and gharials, making it a major draw for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
Tourism entrepreneurs are not only preparing their accommodations and services but also investing in infrastructure. Roads, signage, and public facilities are being upgraded in anticipation of the increased tourist flow. Private sector stakeholders are working in coordination with local authorities to ensure the area is ready to welcome visitors with improved amenities.
Community Efforts for a Successful Season
Local tourism associations, hoteliers, and restaurant owners are collaborating to promote Sauraha as a top destination this season. Joint marketing campaigns, cultural events, and safari package promotions are being planned to attract more visitors. Stakeholders are also prioritizing cleanliness and sustainability to enhance the overall image of Sauraha.
The excitement among tourism entrepreneurs is palpable. The optimism stems not just from the expected rise in tourist numbers, but also from the collective spirit of the community, which is working together to ensure visitors leave with memorable experiences.
