Tanahun’s scenic hilltop town, Bandipur, popularly known as the “Queen of the Hills”, has been positioned as a central tourism hub through the successful completion of the ‘Bandipur in Kathmandu’ program. The event, held under the framework of Bandipur Visit Year 2025, was inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel.
The program was organized by the Regional Hotel Association Tanahun, Bandipur Bazaar Unit, with the support of Bandipur Rural Municipality and promotion from the Nepal Tourism Board, Gandaki Province. It brought together tourism experts, entrepreneurs, local representatives, and social activists to discuss strategies for sustainable tourism growth.
Deputy Prime Minister Emphasizes Cultural and Natural Preservation
In his inaugural address, Deputy Prime Minister Paudel described it as an incomparable heritage of cultural legacy and natural beauty in Nepal. He stressed that preserving the traditional settlement and historical character of Bandipur is essential to maintain its authentic charm.
“It’s unique appeal lies in its cultural heritage and scenic landscapes,” Paudel stated, adding that transforming it into a world-class tourist destination could significantly contribute to the national economy. He also urged all stakeholders to balance development with conservation to ensure long-term sustainability.
Strategic Roadmap for Bandipur Tourism Development
Event coordinator Aashutosh Pradhan presented a detailed working paper outlining it’s tourism potential and future strategies. He envisioned developing it into a distinctive tourist site combining natural and cultural elements.
Pradhan emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure, sustainable tourism practices, environmental conservation, and aggressive international promotion over the next two decades. His presentation highlighted that global outreach, along with community participation, would be key to drawing more international travelers.
Honoring Contributors to Bandipur’s Growth
The event also celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Bandipur. Awards presented included:
- Bandipur Tourism Lifetime Achievement Award to tourism entrepreneur Santa Kumar Shrestha
- Bandipur Health Lifetime Achievement Award to senior cancer specialist Dr. Madan Kumar Piya
- Bandipur Education Lifetime Achievement Award to social worker and educationist Chij Kumar Shrestha
These honors recognized their longstanding efforts in promoting tourism, healthcare, and education in the region.
Local Government Pledges Infrastructure Improvements
Surendra Bahadur Thapa, Chairperson of Bandipur Rural Municipality, reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to prioritizing infrastructure development. He highlighted plans to accelerate work on roads, drinking water supply, sanitation, and creating a tourist-friendly environment. Thapa noted that improving accessibility and facilities will play a critical role in making it more attractive to both domestic and international visitors.
Hospitality Sector Readies for Visit Year 2025
Fulmati Thapa, Chairperson of the Regional Hotel Association Tanahun, Bandipur Bazaar Unit, expressed confidence that it is fully prepared to welcome tourists during Visit Year 2025. She explained that local hoteliers, residents, and concerned agencies are working collectively to enhance the town’s appeal. Initiatives include upgrading lodging facilities, improving cleanliness, and curating cultural programs for visitors.
Nepal Tourism Board Commits Support
Deepak Joshi, Chief Executive Officer of the Nepal Tourism Board, praised it as a high-potential tourism destination. He assured that the Board would extend all necessary support for its promotion, including national and international marketing campaigns. Joshi noted that it’s combination of scenic views, traditional architecture, and cultural vibrancy positions it uniquely in Nepal’s tourism portfolio.

Situated at an altitude of around 1,030 meters above sea level, It is celebrated for its historic Newar settlement, traditional houses, narrow alleys, and preserved cultural heritage. Known as the “Queen of the Hills”, the town offers panoramic Himalayan views, lush hills, cultural festivals, caves, and trekking trails. These attributes have been attracting an increasing number of both domestic and foreign tourists in recent years.
