Upper Mustang has witnessed its first snowfall of the season, covering areas including Korala Naka, Lomanthang Rural Municipality, and Muktinath since early Monday morning, the District Administration Office reported.
Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Bhusal confirmed that snowfall accompanied by rain has affected high-altitude regions of Upper and Lower Mustang, including Chhosar in Lomanthang-2, Korla Naka, and the Muktinath area.
Rabin Subedi, an official of the Muktinath Development Committee, stated that continuous snowfall since early morning has caused difficulties for pilgrims visiting the Muktinath Temple. He added that snow has accumulated around five to six inches, and if the current intensity continues, snow levels could reach up to two feet.
High-Altitude Villages Blanket in Snow
Lopson Chomphel Bista, Chairperson of Lohekar Damodarkund Rural Municipality, reported partial snowfall near settlements and heavy snow at higher elevations. “Snowfall in mid-Kartik is unusual; it hasn’t occurred here for the past two to three years,” he said. He also noted the beneficial impact of snow on agriculture, particularly on grain crops, as it helps enrich the soil and preserve moisture for the upcoming cultivation season.
Pramesh Gurung, Ward Chairperson of Varagung Muktikshetra, confirmed heavy snowfall in high-altitude villages including Khinga, Zhong, Chhengur, and Phalyak. The sudden drop in temperature due to snowfall has affected daily life in these areas. Gurung added that snow benefits crops like apples and other grains by providing essential moisture to the soil, making it a boon for local farmers.
Authorities Advise Against Travel to Muktinath
Due to heavy snowfall, the District Administration Office has advised pilgrims and tourists to avoid traveling from Kagbeni to Muktinath. The dense snow on the road increases the risk of accidents, officials said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Chiring Kippa explained that the blacktopped roads from Kagbeni to Muktinath, particularly at narrow and winding sections like Kalobhir, Khinga, and Jharikot, are covered with thick snow. Authorities have urged travelers to postpone journeys and avoid taking vehicles to the region for safety reasons.
Impact on Tourism and Local Life
The early snowfall has temporarily disrupted local travel and tourism activities in Mustang. Roads and high-altitude trekking routes are covered with snow, limiting vehicular movement and pedestrian travel. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, while tourists visiting high-altitude areas such as Muktinath are asked to stay put until conditions improve.
The snowfall is considered beneficial for agriculture, especially for cereal crops, as it nourishes the soil’s inner layer. Local officials emphasized that while the snow poses temporary challenges for transport and tourism, it is ultimately advantageous for farmers and the local ecosystem.

Authorities have asked local residents and travelers to exercise caution and follow safety measures. Road crews are monitoring affected areas, and any emergency assistance will be coordinated through local administration offices. Officials have stressed that until the snowfall stops and roads are cleared, travel to high-altitude regions remains risky. The District Administration Office, together with local municipalities, is actively coordinating to ensure safety for residents, pilgrims, and tourists.
