In a significant move for Nepali travelers, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government has officially lifted the mandatory transit visa requirement for Nepali passport holders, effective November 15, 2025. This change marks a historic milestone in facilitating smoother travel for Nepali citizens, particularly for those transiting through Hong Kong International Airport en route to third countries or returning to Nepal from abroad.
The Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong confirmed that this development comes after continuous diplomatic engagement and formal requests submitted to Hong Kong authorities. Under the new arrangement, Nepali travelers will no longer need a transit visa provided they remain within the airport’s transit area, making their passage faster and more convenient.
Ending Two Decades of Restrictions
Nepali citizens had been required to obtain a transit visa to pass through Hong Kong since June 2005. Despite Hong Kong International Airport being one of the busiest transit hubs in the world, this visa mandate had long been a barrier, creating delays and complications for Nepali travelers. Many passengers faced the challenge of additional paperwork, application fees, and uncertainties while planning their journeys through Hong Kong.
The removal of this restriction represents a significant easing of travel formalities and is expected to boost both tourism and international travel for Nepal. It also demonstrates Hong Kong’s recognition of the growing number of Nepali travelers and its commitment to facilitating transit efficiency for all nationalities.

Diplomatic Efforts Yield Results
The Consulate General highlighted that this decision is the outcome of persistent diplomatic efforts. Nepalese officials in Hong Kong actively engaged with the HKSAR Government, emphasizing the practical difficulties faced by Nepali travelers due to the mandatory visa requirement. The Consulate’s persistent follow-ups and advocacy were crucial in securing the favorable decision, reflecting Nepal’s growing diplomatic engagement in the region.
“This change will significantly improve the travel experience for Nepali citizens, reducing unnecessary hurdles and providing greater convenience during international transit,” the Consulate stated. Officials noted that the move is expected to encourage more Nepali travelers to consider Hong Kong as a preferred transit hub for flights to Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Boosting Bilateral Relations
Beyond its practical benefits, the transit visa removal carries wider diplomatic significance. The Consulate General underscored that the decision reflects strengthened bilateral ties and growing goodwill between Nepal and Hong Kong. Such facilitative measures highlight a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation and people-to-people connectivity.
The step also signals Hong Kong’s responsiveness to the needs of international travelers and its willingness to accommodate countries with emerging travel markets. By removing a longstanding restriction, Hong Kong is not only making air travel easier for Nepalis but also supporting broader regional connectivity in South Asia.

Appreciation from Nepal
On behalf of the Government of Nepal, the Consulate General expressed its sincere appreciation to the HKSAR Government for taking this positive step. Officials emphasized that the decision will encourage more Nepali citizens to engage in international business, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges via Hong Kong’s airport.
“This is a landmark decision that not only eases travel but also strengthens the bonds between our two regions. We are grateful to Hong Kong for recognizing the importance of facilitating smooth transit for Nepali travelers,” the Consulate added.
The removal of the transit visa requirement is expected to have far-reaching implications for Nepali travelers and the broader tourism sector. With simpler transit procedures, Nepalese tourists, students, and business travelers can now plan journeys with greater efficiency, while airlines may witness increased passenger traffic through Hong Kong.
As of mid-November 2025, Nepali travelers can freely transit through Hong Kong International Airport without the previous visa requirements, provided they remain in the airport’s transit zones. This development paves the way for enhanced international connectivity, promoting smoother travel experiences for thousands of Nepalis in the years to come.
