The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with the Nepal Mountain Instructors’ Association (NMIA), is jointly organizing a two-week ice climbing training under the 7th Ice Climbing Level One Program in Humde, Manang, from 27 January to 5 February 2026. The program is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nepal’s mountaineering workforce by enhancing technical skills, safety standards, and professional competence.
Program Launched with Orientation in Kathmandu
The training program formally commenced with a soft opening in Kathmandu on 23 January, where participants underwent theoretical sessions and outdoor orientation classes. These initial sessions were designed to prepare trainees for the physically demanding and technically intensive field-based training in the high Himalayan region of Manang.

The Kathmandu-based orientation focused on foundational concepts of ice climbing, safety awareness, and acclimatization readiness, ensuring that participants were well-prepared before moving to the field location.

Focus on Technical Skills and International Standards
The primary objective of the training is to strengthen technical ice-climbing skills while promoting international safety standards in Nepal’s mountaineering industry. The program also aims to create employment opportunities for Nepali climbers by equipping them with globally recognized skills and certifications.
The initiative aligns with Nepal’s long-term vision of delivering world-class, safe, and professional mountaineering services from the Himalayas. Nepalese climbers and mountain guides are already internationally recognized for their expertise, and programs such as this further reinforce their professional standing in the global mountaineering community.

Participation and Expert Instruction
A total of 36 participants are taking part in the training, guided by 11 highly experienced instructors with extensive backgrounds in ice climbing and high-altitude mountaineering. The low trainee-to-instructor ratio ensures close supervision, hands-on guidance, and effective skill development.
Comprehensive and Practical Curriculum
The training curriculum emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Participants receive hands-on training in the use of essential climbing equipment, including ice axes, crampons, harnesses, helmets, carabiners, belay devices, slings, and ropes.
In addition, the program covers rope fixing techniques, anchor building, safety and protection systems, rescue procedures, and other critical field applications required for technical ice climbing and high-altitude expeditions. Practical sessions in real ice and alpine conditions form the core of the program, enabling participants to gain real-world experience.

NTB Officials Attend Field Training in Manang
The field-based training in Humde was attended by NTB Senior Director Mr. Hikmat Singh Ayer and NTB Manager Mr. Bimal Kandel, reflecting the strong institutional support behind the program. Their presence highlighted the shared commitment of NTB and NMIA toward capacity building, skill enhancement, and professional development within Nepal’s mountaineering sector.

International Certification and Career Opportunities
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive internationally recognized certification, significantly enhancing their professional credibility. The certification is expected to improve employability opportunities not only within Nepal but also across the global mountaineering and adventure tourism industry.
The NTB and NMIA believe that such training programs play a vital role in strengthening Nepal’s reputation as a leading destination for safe, professional, and high-quality mountaineering, while also empowering local climbers with sustainable career pathways.
