Direct Beni–New Delhi Bus Service Launched to Boost Cross-Border Tourism

In a significant step toward strengthening cross-border connectivity and promoting religious tourism, a direct bus service between Beni in Nepal and New Delhi in India has officially begun operations. The new route is expected to ease travel for pilgrims, tourists, students, and migrant workers while deepening people-to-people ties between the two neighboring countries.

Historic Inauguration Marks New Era of Travel

The service was formally inaugurated by Beni Municipality Mayor Surat KC, who described the initiative as a historic milestone for regional connectivity. The launch reflects growing demand for affordable, reliable, and seamless land transportation between Nepal and India, particularly for travelers from western and central Nepal.

The direct service eliminates the need for multiple transfers and overnight stops, offering a more convenient alternative to traditional travel routes that often require travelers to pass through Pokhara or border towns before continuing their journey.

Joint Venture to Serve Growing Demand

The cross-border bus service is operated as a joint venture between Modern Era Tours and Travels and Sristi Yatayat Pvt Ltd. The operators stated that the route was specifically designed to cater to the increasing number of Nepalese and Indian travelers seeking a safe, economical, and direct road connection.

According to the operators, the service complies with cross-border transport regulations of both countries and follows standard safety protocols to ensure passenger comfort during the long journey.

Connecting Major Pilgrimage and Cultural Destinations

A key objective of the new bus service is to promote religious and cultural tourism. Beni serves as the main gateway to Muktinath Temple in Mustang, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Previously, Indian pilgrims often faced logistical challenges, including long delays and overnight stays in Pokhara, to reach Muktinath.

With the introduction of the direct service, pilgrims can now travel more efficiently between major spiritual destinations such as Ayodhya, Agra, and Muktinath, strengthening the religious tourism circuit between Nepal and India.

The route traverses key locations in both countries:

  • Nepal: Beni, Syangja, Waling, Bhairahawa
  • India: Ayodhya, Agra, and New Delhi

This corridor links cultural, historical, and spiritual hubs, offering travelers a unified pilgrimage and heritage experience.

Service Schedule, Distance, and Fare Structure

Branded as the “Friendship Bus,” the service operates daily with a seating capacity of 45 passengers. The total journey covers approximately 1,400 kilometers, with an estimated travel time of 27 hours, depending on road and border conditions.

The bus departs daily at 6:45 am from Kalipul Bus Park in Beni, while the return service leaves New Delhi at 4:00 pm from Sarojini Nagar. The fare has been set at Rs 5,400 (Nepalese Rupees) from Beni to New Delhi, and INR 3,200 from New Delhi to Beni, making it a cost-effective option compared to air travel or multi-leg road journeys.

Wider Benefits Beyond Tourism

Beyond boosting pilgrimage travel, the service is expected to bring practical benefits to a broader section of the population. Nepalese students, migrant workers, and patients traveling to India for medical treatment are among those likely to benefit from the direct connection.

Transport entrepreneur Ain Bahadur Shahi noted that the service significantly reduces travel stress. “This service eliminates the hassle of changing multiple vehicles and staying overnight in transit cities,” he said. “It also lowers security risks often associated with long-distance cross-border travel.”

Future Expansion and Regional Impact

Operators have indicated plans to explore extending the route through the Kaligandaki Corridor toward the Korala border, Nepal’s frontier with China. If implemented, the extension could transform the route into a strategic corridor for regional trade, tourism, and cultural exchange across South Asia.

The launch of the Beni–New Delhi direct bus service represents a major advancement in Nepal–India connectivity. By linking key pilgrimage destinations, reducing travel barriers, and offering an affordable transportation option, the service is poised to play a vital role in promoting religious tourism, enhancing regional cooperation, and supporting economic and social mobility across borders.
