73rd International Mount Everest Day Celebrated in Yangon with “Sagarmatha: Identity and Pride of Nepal”

The Embassy of Nepal in Yangon organized a special program to celebrate the 73rd International Mount Everest Day under the slogan “Sagarmatha: Identity and Pride of Nepal” at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Yangon, today. The event brought together diplomats, international representatives, and members of the Nepali community to honor the world’s highest peak and its significance in Nepal’s national identity and global tourism appeal.

At the beginning of the program, a video message delivered by Hon. Shisir Khanal, Minister for Foreign Affairs, was presented to the attendees. The message emphasized the global importance of Mount Sagarmatha and Nepal’s role as the guardian of the Himalayas.

Ambassador Highlights Everest’s Legacy and Tourism Potential

Welcoming the guests, Ambassador Harishchandra Ghimire highlighted the historical significance of International Mount Everest Day and its role in promoting Nepal’s identity worldwide. He noted that Everest Day celebrations in 2026 aim to draw global attention to Mount Everest facts, inspire adventurers, and reinforce Nepal’s position as the gateway to the Himalayas.

Sharing expedition data, Ambassador Ghimire mentioned the remarkable achievement of 56-year-old Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa, widely known as the “Everest Man”, who successfully summited Mount Everest for the 32nd time on 17 May 2026, setting another historic milestone in mountaineering.

Strengthening Nepal–Myanmar Tourism Relations

Highlighting the long-standing friendly relations between Nepal and Myanmar, Ambassador Ghimire stated that more than 25,000 Myanmar tourists visited Lumbini this year, which is nearly three times higher than last year’s figure.

He further emphasized that expanding direct air connectivity between Yangon and Mandalay with Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa would open new opportunities for tourism growth and cultural exchange. The Ambassador also urged Myanmar-based travel and tour operators to develop dedicated travel packages promoting Nepal as a key destination for Myanmar tourists.

Documentary and Everest Climbers’ Interaction

Guests were shown a documentary showcasing detailed information about Mount Everest and its global significance, prepared with support from the Nepal Tourism Board.

A special segment titled “Conversation with Myanmar Summiters” featured Myanmar’s Everest climbers Mr. Pyae Phyo Aung and Mr. Win Ko Ko, who shared their experiences of successfully summiting Everest in 2016. The session was moderated by Ambassador Ghimire, while Mr. Laxman Neupane, a member of the Nepali community in Myanmar, facilitated translation. The Ambassador also honored the climbers with khada and souvenirs as a token of appreciation.

Wide Participation from the Diplomatic Community

The program witnessed the participation of more than 130 guests, including ambassadors, heads of diplomatic missions, representatives of UN agencies and international organizations, government officials, business leaders, and members of the Nepali community.

Nepali Cuisine Dinner Concludes the Event

Following the formal proceedings, guests were hosted to a dinner featuring traditional Nepali cuisine, including momo, chhoila, achar, and other delicacies, offering participants a cultural taste of Nepal.
