The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trekking trail is undergoing a major upgrade. One of Nepal’s most beloved and internationally celebrated trekking destinations is getting a significant facelift. The trail leading to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), nestled in the heart of the Annapurna mountain range in Kaski district, is currently undergoing a comprehensive upgrade aimed at making the iconic trekking route safer, better organised, and more welcoming for the growing number of domestic and international trekkers who flock to this legendary Himalayan destination each year.
The upgrade, which is being carried out with a joint investment from the Nepal Tourism Board, Gandaki Province, and Annapurna Rural Municipality, marks an important milestone in Nepal’s ongoing commitment to developing world-class trekking infrastructure in its most prized mountain destinations.
Scope of the Upgrade: From Ghandruk Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp
The trail improvement and tourist infrastructure development work is currently focused on the section stretching from Ghandruk Deurali in Kaski district to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC), a critical and scenically spectacular segment of the overall ABC trekking route. Annapurna Rural Municipality has confirmed that the project is being implemented with the clear long-term objective of developing the Annapurna region into an internationally recognised, safe, and attractive trekking destination that meets the expectations and standards of global adventure travellers.
The specific section between Deurali and Annapurna Base Camp has long been identified as one of the most sensitive and challenging parts of the trail, exposed to the full range of high-altitude hazards, including snowfall, landslides, heavy monsoon rain, and falling rocks. These natural risks, combined with the increasing volume of trekkers using the route, have made the need for systematic trail improvement and protective infrastructure both urgent and essential.

Annapurna Rural Municipality Chairperson Bishnu Bahadur KC confirmed that the current phase of work is being carried out at a total cost of NPR 45 lakh during the current fiscal year, funded through the joint investment of the Nepal Tourism Board, Gandaki Province and Annapurna Rural Municipality, a collaboration that reflects the shared commitment of both provincial and local government to the sustainable development of the Annapurna region’s tourism infrastructure.
Key Infrastructure Works: Stone Steps, Wider Paths, and Safety Structures in Annapurna Base Camp (ABC Trek)
The upgrade encompasses a comprehensive range of infrastructure improvements designed to address the specific challenges and hazards of the high-altitude trekking environment in ABC Trek. The construction of stone staircases along steep and erosion-prone sections of the trail is one of the most visible and impactful elements of the work, providing trekkers with a stable, durable, and all-weather surface that significantly reduces the risk of slipping and falling, particularly during wet and icy conditions that are common at the altitudes reached along this route.

Trail widening is another key component of the upgrade, creating sufficient space for trekkers to pass safely and comfortably in both directions, an increasingly important consideration given the growing numbers of trekkers on the ABC route. In risk-prone locations identified as being particularly vulnerable to landslides, rockfall, and other natural hazards, protective structures are being constructed to provide physical barriers and safety measures that minimise exposure to these dangers.
Beyond the immediate trail surface improvements, the project also encompasses the development of essential tourist infrastructure along the route, facilities that enhance the overall trekking experience and ensure that visitors have access to the basic services and amenities they need during what can be a multi-day journey through remote high-altitude terrain above 3,500 metres above sea level.
Safety as the Top Priority at High Altitude in ABC Trek
The Annapurna Rural Municipality has been explicit in stating that the safety of domestic and international trekkers reaching Annapurna Base Camp is the foremost priority driving the entire infrastructure upgrade. The trail improvement work is being carried out in terrain that presents formidable natural challenges, the infrastructure being constructed at altitudes exceeding 3,500 metres above sea level in remote and physically demanding mountain environments where the logistics of construction are themselves a significant undertaking.
Chairperson KC expressed strong confidence that the trail upgrade will substantially enhance the appeal and attractiveness of the Annapurna region as a premier Himalayan trekking destination. “ABC trekking has seen growing attraction from both domestic and international tourists. The importance of Annapurna is recognised worldwide. That is why we are building the trail to provide additional facilities and greater comfort for tourists coming to this area,” he said, capturing the vision that underpins the entire project.

Ward Chairperson: Upgrade Will Boost Local Economy
Ward Chairperson of Annapurna-11, Him Bahadur Gurung, expressed enthusiastic support for the trail upgrade and highlighted not only its direct benefits for trekkers but also its broader positive implications for the local economy and community livelihoods. He confirmed his belief that the improvement of the Deurali-Machhapuchhre Base Camp trail will make trekking significantly safer, more convenient, and better organised for all visitors.
Crucially, Gurung also pointed to the wider economic ripple effects that improved trekking infrastructure is expected to generate for local communities along and near the trail. “The improvement of the Deurali-Machhapuchhre Base Camp trail will make things easier for tourists. Along with this, it will support local hotel businesses, transportation services, the marketing of agricultural products, and economic activities related to tourism,” he said, outlining the multi-dimensional community benefits that flow from investment in high-quality trekking infrastructure.
His remarks highlight an important truth about trekking infrastructure development in Nepal, that the benefits extend far beyond the immediate convenience of trekkers to create real and tangible improvements in the livelihoods of local communities whose economic well-being is directly tied to the quality and sustainability of the trekking experience they are able to offer.
ABC Trek: Nepal’s Crown Jewel of Himalayan Trekking
The Annapurna Base Camp trek is widely regarded as one of Nepal’s most popular and rewarding Himalayan trekking experiences, drawing tens of thousands of domestic and international trekkers each year with its extraordinary combination of dramatic mountain scenery, rich cultural immersion, and accessible high-altitude adventure. The trek offers trekkers the remarkable experience of walking through diverse landscapes, from terraced rice paddies and traditional Gurung villages in the lower elevations to rhododendron forests, high-altitude meadows, and ultimately the breathtaking glacial amphitheatre of Annapurna Base Camp itself, surrounded by towering Himalayan giants.

The mesmerising panoramic views of the Annapurna Himal, including Annapurna I (8,091 metres), the iconic fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre, and the striking summit of Himchuli, make the ABC trek one of the most visually spectacular mountain journeys available to trekkers anywhere in the world. It is this extraordinary natural setting, combined with the warm hospitality of the local Gurung and Magar communities along the route, that has made the ABC trek a firm favourite among trekkers of all experience levels and nationalities.
The ongoing trail upgrade is expected to further elevate the trekking experience, ensuring that the journey to Annapurna Base Camp not only continues to deliver the natural and cultural wonders that have made it famous but also does so in a manner that is safer, more comfortable, and more consistently high-quality than ever before.

Future Plans: Rest Stops, Information Centres, and More Trail Upgrades in ABC trek
The current phase of trail improvement and infrastructure development represents just the beginning of Annapurna Rural Municipality’s broader vision for the development of the Annapurna region as a world-class trekking destination. The municipality has confirmed that it is committed to prioritising and advancing a series of additional tourism infrastructure development plans in the coming years, building on the foundation laid by the current upgrade of the ABC trek.
Among the priority initiatives planned for the future are the upgrade of additional trail sections beyond the current project scope, the construction of rest stops and shelters at strategic points along the route, the development of information centres to provide trekkers with accurate, up-to-date, and safety-relevant information about trail conditions and the surrounding environment, and further tourism infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing the overall quality and sustainability of the trekking experience in the Annapurna region.
These plans reflect Annapurna Rural Municipality’s long-term vision of positioning the ABC trek not merely as a popular trekking route but as a world-class, internationally benchmarked trekking destination that can compete with the best mountain trails anywhere on the planet, while remaining true to the natural beauty, cultural authenticity, and community values that make it uniquely and irreplaceably Nepali.
