Global airline giant Emirates has officially marked a major milestone in its African expansion strategy after flight EK778 landed at Cape Town International Airport for the first time, bringing the airline’s next-generation Airbus A350 aircraft to South Africa for its inaugural commercial service.
The arrival of the new service marks the launch of Emirates’ third daily flight between Dubai and Cape Town, further strengthening air connectivity between South Africa and the Middle East while expanding travel options for both business and leisure passengers traveling through Dubai to the airline’s vast global network. The historic landing took place at Cape Town International Airport at 18:05 local time, officially introducing the advanced Airbus A350-900 into the South African aviation market under Emirates’ growing fleet modernization program.

Airbus A350 Debuts in South Africa with Enhanced Passenger Experience
The newly introduced Airbus A350-900 represents the latest addition to Emirates’ all-widebody aircraft fleet and brings significant upgrades aimed at improving passenger comfort and in-flight experience. According to the airline, the new aircraft features a spacious cabin design, brighter interiors, improved passenger comfort across all travel classes, advanced onboard technology, and upgraded entertainment systems designed for long-haul international travel.
One of the biggest highlights of the new aircraft deployment is the expanded availability of Emirates’ highly demanded Premium Economy cabin, which the airline first introduced in South Africa in September 2025 and has reportedly gained strong popularity among international travelers seeking premium comfort at more affordable pricing compared to traditional business class. Aviation analysts say the deployment reflects the airline’s strategy of introducing newer-generation aircraft on high-demand international routes where passenger demand and service quality expectations continue rising.
Emirates Sees Strong Growth Potential in Cape Town Market
Commenting on the new service launch, Afzal Parambil, Regional Manager for Southern Africa at Emirates, said Cape Town remains one of the airline’s strongest performing destinations within its African network. He said the decision to launch a third daily service using the company’s newest aircraft demonstrates Emirates’ long-term confidence in South Africa’s growing travel market and its commitment to strengthening passenger connectivity through Dubai.
“Cape Town has long been one of the most popular destinations on our African network. The launch of a third daily service, operated with our newest aircraft, shows how much we believe in this market. The new flight gives travellers more options and an easier connection to our global network through Dubai, while the A350 offers the latest passenger experience,” Parambil stated. He also acknowledged the cooperation received from South African aviation authorities in facilitating the launch of the new service.

Improved Global Connectivity for South African Travelers
The newly launched third daily Dubai–Cape Town service significantly improves travel flexibility for South African passengers by providing more connection options through Emirates’ global hub at Dubai. The expanded schedule is expected to improve connectivity for travelers heading toward destinations across West Asia, Australasia, the Far East, Europe, and other long-haul international markets served through Emirates’ worldwide route network. Industry observers say stronger air connectivity between South Africa and Dubai could positively impact both tourism and business travel, particularly as global travel demand continues recovering strongly in major long-haul markets.
Partnership with Wesgro Aims to Boost Tourism Arrivals
The latest expansion also builds upon a strategic tourism partnership agreement signed in April 2026 between Emirates and Wesgro, the tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and South Africa’s Western Cape region. Under the agreement, both organizations are working together to attract more international visitors from major source markets including the Gulf region, India, and key Far East markets, helping strengthen inbound tourism to South Africa. Tourism officials believe the expanded airline capacity will play an important role in supporting South Africa’s broader tourism recovery strategy by improving direct access from high-value international visitor markets.
Emirates Restores Fourth Daily Johannesburg Flight
Alongside its Cape Town expansion, Emirates has also officially reinstated its fourth daily service between Dubai and Johannesburg from 1 July 2026, further expanding operations in South Africa. With the latest network expansion, Emirates now operates a consistent schedule of 56 weekly flights between South Africa and Dubai, connecting travelers through its three South African gateways.
To support growing passenger demand, the airline has also introduced a seasonal second Airbus A380 service to Johannesburg, with flights EK761 and EK762 now being operated using a fully retrofitted Airbus A380 aircraft equipped with upgraded cabin interiors and Premium Economy seating. This significantly increases seat capacity at O. R. Tambo International Airport, South Africa’s largest international aviation hub.

Expanded Flights Strengthen Cargo and Trade Connectivity
Beyond passenger transportation, Emirates says the increased flight frequencies will also significantly strengthen international trade connectivity through Emirates SkyCargo operations. Using cargo capacity available on Boeing 777, the new Airbus A350-900, and daily services operating from Durban, the airline transports key South African export products including fresh fruits, vegetables, chilled meat, dairy products, seafood, and fresh-cut flowers to international markets worldwide. Logistics experts say improved air cargo capacity helps South African exporters access global markets faster and more efficiently while strengthening international trade flows between Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Emirates Continues Fleet Modernization and African Expansion Strategy
The latest developments reflect Emirates’ broader strategy of modernizing its global fleet while strengthening connectivity across high-growth international aviation markets. Industry experts say Africa remains one of the most strategically important growth markets for global airlines as tourism demand, trade activity, and international passenger movement continue expanding rapidly across the continent. The introduction of the airline’s latest-generation aircraft and increased flight frequency further positions Emirates as one of the leading international carriers connecting Africa with the rest of the world through its Dubai hub.
