International travel demand from the United States during the Independence Day (July 4) holiday period is increasingly shifting toward destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, according to a new analysis by travel intelligence company Data Appeal Mabrian.
The study, based on the company’s Share of Searches Index, analyzed U.S. travel intent for international trips scheduled between July 2 and July 6, 2026. The findings were derived from travel search data collected between April 1 and June 18, 2026, offering insights into changing preferences among American outbound travelers.

Tokyo Emerges as the Fastest-Growing Destination
Among all international destinations, Tokyo recorded the strongest year-on-year increase in travel demand from U.S. travelers, with its Share of Searches Index rising by 1.24 percentage points compared to the same holiday period in 2025.
Paris ranked second with an increase of 0.57 percentage points, followed closely by Athens, which posted a gain of 0.55 percentage points. The results indicate growing enthusiasm among American travelers for long-haul international destinations, particularly in Asia and Southern Europe.
Southern Europe Continues to Attract U.S. Travelers
Several major European cities also experienced notable increases in travel demand. Italy remained one of the strongest performers, with Milan recording a 0.37 percentage-point increase and Rome rising by 0.35 percentage points. Spain also demonstrated solid growth, with Barcelona gaining 0.30 percentage points and Madrid increasing by 0.18 percentage points. Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, posted a 0.21 percentage-point rise, reflecting continued interest in Mediterranean and Southern European destinations.

Asia Gains Momentum
Asia emerged as one of the fastest-growing regions for U.S. outbound tourism. In addition to Tokyo’s exceptional performance, Seoul, South Korea, recorded a 0.20 percentage-point increase in travel demand. Bali and destinations across Vietnam also reported moderate growth, highlighting increasing American interest in Asian leisure and cultural destinations.
Caribbean Remains a Popular Choice
The Caribbean continued to strengthen its appeal among American holidaymakers. San Juan, Puerto Rico, registered one of the region’s strongest gains, with travel intent increasing by 0.49 percentage points compared to last year. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic also experienced positive growth, recording a 0.14 percentage-point increase during the July 4 travel period.
Traditional Markets Continue to Perform
Although Europe and Asia recorded the strongest growth, Data Appeal Mabrian noted that neighboring destinations in Canada and Mexico remain among the most popular choices for U.S. travelers. The company said that while some destinations in these markets experienced modest declines in travel intent, their proximity, extensive flight connectivity, and established travel patterns continue to make them key pillars of U.S. outbound tourism.

Changing Travel Preferences
According to the analysis, the July 4 holiday travel trends demonstrate Americans’ growing willingness to explore long-haul destinations while maintaining strong demand for nearby international markets. The report identifies Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean as the fastest-growing regions for outbound U.S. travel this holiday season, with Tokyo, Paris, Athens, Milan, Rome, and Barcelona emerging among the destinations experiencing the highest year-on-year growth in travel intent.
The findings suggest that improving international connectivity, strong consumer confidence in overseas travel, and continued interest in cultural and leisure experiences are driving the diversification of U.S. outbound tourism beyond traditional regional destinations.
